Netanyahu Defies Biden, Opposition Protests; Passes First Judicial Reform
Breitbart ^ | 24 Jul 2023 | JOEL B. POLLAK

Israel’s parliament, or Knesset, passed the first of several judicial reforms proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government on Monday, defying protests and pressure from the White House.

The new law prevents courts from using their own idea of “reasonableness” in blocking government policies. Critics had long argued that the “reasonableness” doctrine allowed the left-leaning judiciary to abuse its power, and that it tended to do so more often against Israel’s conservative governments.

Netanyahu came out of hospital on Monday morning, where he had been fitted with a pacemaker over the weekend, to attend the vote.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters — both for and against the reform — demonstrated around the country. Police used water cannons to deter some demonstrators who wanted to block the entrance to the Knesset.

U.S. President Joe Biden, whose administration publicly opposes Israel’s internal reforms, issued a last-minute warning to Netanyahu not to proceed. (Biden’s own administration has mulled “packing” the Supreme Court.)

The fate of remaining reforms is unclear. Netanyahu paused the overall reform package after protests in the spring, allowing time to negotiate with opposition parties. But those talks collapsed. He then decided to move ahead with the reforms, albeit in piecemeal fashion.

Many of the reforms closely parallel existing practice in the U.S. and other democratic countries; Israel’s judiciary began amassing extraordinary powers in the 1990s.

And Bibi’s reforms are merely bringing things back into balance. Now that the Israel’s conservatives final have the power to fight back against the Left’s judicial power grab, progs everywhere are going meshugenah, realizing they can’t do a damn thing to stop it.

Biden has no business interfering in Israel’s internal domestic affairs. And not just Israel’s but he needs to keep his nose out of other country’s internal domestic affairs as well.

I believe it was when Obama was essentially invited to weigh in on Brexit that the custom of mostly avoiding commenting on the normal internal affairs of allies was abandoned. The horror of having a democratic country governed by its elected leaders is just too much, hence the US administration endlessly trying to interfere

Netanyahu Defies Biden”

Even the headline is offensive. Biden has no standing in another nations affairs. Especially when he stole the election to become President in the first place.

How does the leader of a free and fully sovereign nation “defy” a foreign leader?

Biden has no business telling any nation what to do, leaders of free nationss only offer advice, not issue commands.

I’m glad Netanyahu stood up to him. Just because we send Israel significant military aide doesn’t make Israel a lapdog of the US when it comes to their domestic issues.

U.S. President Joe Biden, whose administration publicly opposes Israel’s internal reforms, issued a last-minute warning to Netanyahu not to proceed.

Can we please stop meddling in how other nations govern themselves? It's none of our business how Israel's judiciary works. We are happy to put up with China's human rights abuses - we have no standing to point fingers or issue last-minute warnings to anyone else.

This is great. If Netanyahu had shown weakness, it would have emboldened the enemies of Israel and the enemies of government by consent.
