Canada’s nuclear drive picks up speed

Canada’s plans to make nuclear power a central part of its decarbonization strategy are taking shape with major announcements around large nuclear builds, small modular reactors and medical isotopes..

Nuclear power accounts for around 15% of Canada’s electricity generation with most capacity in Ontario where some 40% of the population resides.

A total of 19 reactors provide around 13.6 gigawatts (GW) across the country, though most are in the provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick, which are 60% and 36% powered by nuclear respectively.

...

increasingly vocal support for urgent greenhouse-gas-emission reduction have helped bring the government back to nuclear power, especially in Ontario.

The Federal Budget 2023, announced in March, showed strong support for nuclear power.

...

Large reactors.

At the start of July, Ontario announced that it was beginning pre-development work to site a large-scale nuclear power build over three decades. Community and environmental assessments would aim to win federal approval to determine the feasibility of new nuclear generation of up to 4.8 GW,

...

The build, the first large scale nuclear project in the country since 1993, will be on the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station site in Bruce County, the world’s largest operating nuclear power station with eight units generating 6.4 GW, or 30% of Ontario’s electricity, across a 2,300-acre site.

...

in less than 30 years, Ontario would need to more than double its electricity generation capacity to 88 GW in 2050 from 42 GW today.

The report forecast an additional 17.8 GW of nuclear power could be required to meet that demand increase.

...

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced in July it will work with the provincial government to plan and license three additional SMRs at the Darlington nuclear site.

OPG had originally only planned to build one SMR at the site,

President Trump might benefit by getting behind this and a big push to build 100 new plants here to solidify our grid and satisfy the climate alarmists in a reasonable way.
Thoughts?

Note they didn't say anything about additional 'renewable' energy. It's nice to have adults in charge.

I do too. We NEED to revive the modern nuclear power industry in the US and the world. And modernize and harden our electrical grid. This can do both.

The sun don’t shine all that much in Ontario.

It’s nice when it does, but then it’s also cold much of the year

Not enough beaver dams to power Toronto.

“..a big push to build 100 new plants here to solidify our grid and satisfy the climate alarmists in a reasonable way.”

Leftists should never be allowed to drive the Overton window for conservatives.

The whole CO2 and even “air pollution” is fake, anyway. In Germany the Greens demanded closing the last three nuclear plants, and the same Green Party supports more coal fired plants. And they have even supported expropriating a whole village to build a new coal mine.

These fake @ssholes should be given no consideration whatsoever !

“...beginning pre-development work to site a large-scale nuclear power build over three decades. “

if these clowns can build even one new plant in the next three decades, I will be surprised.

All you have to do is look at the Northern Gateway pipeline, and it tells you how this will go.

I understand your sentiment here.
What if the puppies under Trump, co-optedthe lefts climate position and denied them it for election campaigning? Win win. We harden the grid with better lines and build excess capacity to prevent blackouts.

the same Green Party supports more coal fired plants. And they have even supported expropriating a whole village to build a new coal mine.

"Two Greens ministers fronted the government decision to demolish Luetzerath village in western Germany [...]

"The government, in which the Greens are a coalition partner, agreed to the mine expansion by RWE on condition the energy firm phased out coal eight years earlier than planned in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia."
