The Fake Climate Consensus

We are told climate change is a crisis, and that there is an "overwhelming scientific consensus."

"It's a manufactured consensus," says climate scientist Judith Curry in my new video. She says scientists have an incentive to exaggerate risk to pursue "fame and fortune."

She knows about that because she once spread alarm about climate change.

Media loved her when she published a study that seemed to show a dramatic increase in hurricane intensity.

"We found that the percent of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes had doubled," says Curry. "This was picked up by the media," and then climate alarmists realized, "Oh, here is the way to do it. Tie extreme weather events to global warming!"

"So, this hysteria is your fault!" I tell her.

"Not really," she smiles. "They would have picked up on it anyways."

But Curry's "more intense" hurricanes gave them fuel.

"I was adopted by the environmental advocacy groups and the alarmists and I was treated like a rock star," Curry recounts. "Flown all over the place to meet with politicians."

But then some researchers pointed out gaps in her research -- years with low levels of hurricanes.

"Like a good scientist, I investigated," says Curry. She realized that the critics were right. "Part of it was bad data. Part of it is natural climate variability."

Curry was the unusual researcher who looked at criticism of her work and actually concluded "they had a point."

Here's a point... 'Wildfires' do not start by themselves... Somebody lights the match and the media and authorities are for some odd reason failing to seek out those arsonist... I guess if you don't bother looking, then it makes the investigating part easier.

Earth historical temperature, ice ages, warm periods, glacial periods and interglacial warm periods: We are in an interglacial warming period in an ice age period.

The first graph shows the long-term average global temperature view of warm periods and ice ages:

Note that Ice ages vary in length, but 50 million years is pretty typical. Warm periods last much longer than ice ages.

The second graph shows temperature variations for the last 450,000 years in our current Ice Age which started about 10 million years ago, depending on exactly where you want to specify the start temperature from graph 1. (The temperature scale on graph 2 is the average temperature at the Antarctica glacier bore site, not the same as the average global temperature from graph 1):

The temperature for the current interglacial warm period from ice core data in Greenland is shown in graph 3. Note that the temperature always fluctuates and that the current temperature is not out of the normal range of fluctuations:

Well those things weren’t recorded real time so they apparently don’t count. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘

They don't fit the leftist narrative so they already did not count.

Any level of fanaticism can be wrought from statistics. The devil is in the raw data ie: the percentage of cat 4-5 weather events doubled in the last decade. The actual number rose from 2% to 4% - an insignificant increase.

There’s climate “consensus” among those who have paid positions as climate “scientists”. What a surprise! No conflict of interest there whatsoever!

But going from 2% to 4% is still a doubling.

IIRC, The referenced paper of which Curry’s work was a part mainly reflected a combination of now being able to see cat4s and 5s which did not make landfall, and the increased value of real-estate.

There is no doubt that many are started by arsonists and careless campers but some are started by lightening.

That’s a relatively rare event... ‘Spontaneous combustion’ is total nonsense and most media reports appear to suggest that these fires start magically...

With a lit match wood will begin burning at 662 degrees Fahrenheit... For spontaneous combustion you would need a temperature of 1112 Fahrenheit... That never happens.

So well there is the odd ‘wildfire’ started by lightning... The vast majority are started by people and those people should be held responsible.

They are called arsonist and they need to be caught and convicted. Something the media doesn’t bother reporting and the authorities likely aren’t doing... It’s so much easier to just say.. Global warming and blame that instead... Because if you catch somebody... Well then... It’s their fault and not global warming’s fault.
