Are you perhaps thinking of Luke Sissyfag? He legally changed his name to Luke Sissyfag for about two years, then changed it back to Luke Montgomery. He’s still alive.

Haven't heard of that one. The one I'm thinking of was a real flamer from the San Francisco area, all up in the protest biz, croaked from AIDS somewhere around 2004 to 2006 maybe. There were online news articles all over the place about his demise. Either that's been buried off the internet or accuracy of my memory has failed me.
