After months of inching through minefields, villages and open steppes in grueling combat, Ukrainian forces are making somewhat bigger advances along two major lines of attack, according to analysts, Ukrainian officials and Russian military bloggers.
Although Ukraine has not advanced more than 10 to 12 miles on either vector of attack, its gains are important in that it is compelling Moscow to divert forces from other parts of the front line, military analysts say. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, called the advances “tactically significant,” saying Moscow’s redeployment would most “likely further weaken Russian defensive lines in aggregate,” creating “opportunities for any Ukrainian breakthrough to be potentially decisive.”

In the ground war, the Ukrainians are advancing south along two principal lines of attack: through the eastern village of Staromaiorske toward the Russian-occupied city of Berdiansk, a port on the Sea of Azov; and farther west toward the Russian-occupied city of Melitopol, a vital transportation hub near the coast.
Ukrainian forces have progressed about 10 to 12 miles along both lines from their starting places at the onset of the counteroffensive in early June. Kyiv’s goal is to reach the Sea of Azov and drive a wedge into the so-called land bridge between Russia and Crimea, which is vital to the Russian military’s supply routes to the west.

It is BS. They haven’t done squat but set loose some drones.
Time for us to cut them off the money teat.
The NYT is hardly a source that speaks truth.
Why are you more concerned about Ukraine than the United States?
Every single day you post Ukraine threads and nothing about US issues.
Who do you work for?
What’s your ethnicity?
LOL
Just stop
Even with this “advance” in a few small areas they are still well north of the Russians main defense lines
Also Russia is conducting its own offensive in Northeastern Ukraine and gaining ground
But every day we have the Russian counter offensive on FR and we are assaulted with statements that the war is over, the counter offensive failed already, everyone admitted it, the Russians are attacking everywhere, etc.
I don’t predict the outcome of the war, but it’s a war. It’s being fought there not here. The Ukrainians didn’t achieve a quick break through, but they have continued slow steady progress.
I’d heard an estimate that it would take 2 years to expel the Russians, assuming the Ukrainians succeed.
WTF is ‘tactically significant’? The NYT is the master of NewSpeak and lying is its stock in trade.
Yeah he’s a filthy Ukrainian or something. Is that how you discuss a war?
I’m German French Irish and Italian but really I’m an American and I support Ukraine.
Isn’t that incredible?
Just a few hundred billion more and it’s in the bag. /s
I wonder the same things. Also, are these accounts legitimate? Were they hacked or stolen? Some are decades old. What did they post before this war? I would think they would have been noticed before as propagandists. Some of them don’t even sound like native English speakers.
WTF is ‘tactically significant’?
the new “feel good” phrase of the day
I have been following all of this closely
The Institute for the Study of War has a huge western bias and not the best track record. Also they seem to be 36-48 hours behind the war bloggers with info
No, it’s foolish.
Also, I didn’t ask you anything.
The issues are NOT mutually exclusive.
Every single day you post Ukraine threads and nothing about US issues.
That's not true.
Who do you work for?
I own and operate my own business. It's good to be boss!
What’s your ethnicity?
Caucasian American, earliest immigrant ancestor landed in America in the 17th century as a soldier. You know, land of the free and home of the brave? Live free or die?
Satisfied?
Tactically significant means the cash pipeline is flowing from the US taxpayer to the US military industrial complex with a cut going to Zelensky and a handful of his comedian friends. Tactically significant is the military equivalent of Big Pharma’s “clinically significant” i.e. dollars, dependency, disability, and death.
Hey, the Muscovites are admitting it themselves this morning on their Telegram channels. Hard to dismiss that, like you do the NYTs!
No, I think you’re a liar.
“Moving to cut off Crimea”
Yeah, a year ago.
I wonder if the NY Times mentioned that those SAME SITES that they’re reporting on also notes that Ukraine is now using CHEMICAL WEAPONS.
Not very smart, since Russia likely have a LOT MORE Chemical Weapons.

This is a most interesting assertion.
If true, why not sidestep the NYTimes and post URLs to the Telegram channels which you are watching? It would cut out the rhetorical middle man, at the minimum.
Please post the links to those Telegram channels to which you refer. Thanks in advance.
I’d heard an estimate that it would take 2 years to expel the Russians, assuming the Ukrainians succeed.
Ukraine may run out of bodies before then
Ukraine had a population of 44 million before the war
but some of them are under Russian control now. Plus you have people that fled and war deaths
some people are estimating that the current population of Ukraine is really only around 30 million now
Russia is now in a war economy increasing not only production of war supplies at existing factories but adding more physical capacity
Brand new cruise missiles, tanks and aircraft now rolling of the lines
they are now building a factory to produce Iranian drones in house
