Trump denies that he had sex with Stormy Daniels and she has presented no evidence, so I'm inclined to give Trump the benefit of the doubt on this. Paying her off for a non-disclosure agreement made sense because if she had made the allegation before the election it would have cost Trump a lot of votes from people who would assume the accusation was true.

George W. Bush would have won easily in 2000 if not for the 24-year-old drunk driving arrest becoming public five days before the election. It was estimated that that cost him 4 million votes.

I don’t recall when that accusation came out. It may have
been right before the election, and that would shine a
different light on it, as for how to respond.
