Shattuck Avenue Walgreens in Berkeley is closing permanently
San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate.com ^ | Aug 15, 2023 | By Tessa McLean

Another Walgreens is closing in the Bay Area.

The location at 2190 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley is set to close permanently Aug. 23, as first reported in Berkeleyside. Walgreens would have needed to vacate the building eventually, as it will be torn down to make way for a new 25-story residential tower, part of a large development of buildings in the city.

Berkeleyside reports that many shelves at the store are already bare, but plenty of merchandise is still available at a big discount. Prescriptions will be transferred to the Walgreens at 2310 Telegraph Ave.

“As we move forward on our strategy to expand Walgreens role as a leader in the delivery of local healthcare, we are focused on creating the right network of stores in the right locations to best meet the needs of the communities we serve,” Walgreens wrote in a statement provided to SFGATE. “We have made the difficult decision to close this location. There are a number of factors that we take into consideration including dynamics of the local market and changing buying habits of our customers.”

There are three Walgreens stores left in Berkeley: 2310 Telegraph Ave., 10 Gilman St. and 2801 Adeline St.

The pharmacy chain has been closing down stores across the Bay Area for the past few years. While Walgreens has blamed crime in the past, the company has also noted it sought to consolidate stores in an effort to cut costs. California Gov. Gavin Newsom also took aim at Walgreens earlier this year after the company announced that it would not be shipping abortion medication to at least 20 states across the U.S. It’s unclear what that means for the state’s relationship with Walgreens.

Good for them. Shut the door. No more service. If I was in business to make money, this is what would have to be done. Let Joe Biden put in a pharmacy with Hunter on that corner.

At the current exodus rate, pretty soon the traffic problems in the Bay Area will be solved.

Cabrini-Green West, or what we informally refer to as "chocolate layer cake".

The Telegraph pharmacy doesn’t answer the phone.

That's the one across from the UC Berkeley campus, frequented by students.

The one closing on Shattuck is near downtown Berkeley BART.

[we take into consideration including dynamics of the local market]

Is that a euphemism for “the thieves are stealing us into huge financial losses at this location”?

Wonder what the lesser city dwellers will do when the fast food is all closed down and grocery stores etc. Is that when the looting of the suburbs begin?

Berkely loses an asset to the community. I worked near there for a few years back in the day. Berkely was grimy then, it must be awfully gross today.

The other story is that a 25 story building will be constructed about a mile from the Hayward fault. This fault is part of the San Andreas fault network, and by some reconning, just might be due for a major seism.

Oh, and the major hospitals in the area? Unless things have changed in the past 20 years, they are right on the fault as well.

A few years ago, we stopped at the Ikea right next to Berkeley. As we took the freeway off ramp, there were many, many tents. This is nothing new in Kalifornia. What was very noticeable was the two stories of shhhhtuff in the middle of all the tents. It appears that all the tent dwellers just dump whatever on this pile of #&@*. Even more amusing, if that word applies, was the Apple store right nearby. It was packed with customers, and many of them probably voted to keep the pile of crap growing and growing.

Re: ‘they (Kalifornia) voted for this’

There are only ‘selections’ in Kalifornia now. The Obama / Biden Regime learned from the Kalifornia democRATS how to ‘select’ in the Federal system.

During the last Kalifornia selection, Newscum announced he had ‘won’ three minutes after the polls closed. They had ‘drop boxes’ for ballot stuffing all over Kalifornia. ALL Kalifornia ‘selections’ are now only by mail.
