$15 an hour isn’t enough: U.S. workers need to earn a living wage
The Hill ^ | 08/25/2023 | SUZIE COEN

As cost increases persist and workers try to keep up, buzzwords like “poverty wage,” “minimum wage” and “living wage” are coming back into the lexicon, shaping conversations about what it means to make enough and who decides where to draw the line.

The federal minimum wage, which was last raised in 2009, stands at $7.25 an hour.

A full-time employee, working an average of 40 hours per week on minimum wage, makes $15,000 annually (which puts these workers below the poverty line in many states).

A recent study from SmartAsset found that the average American worker needs $68,499 in after-tax income to live comfortably. That works out to around $85,000 in total income––assuming a 20% tax hit.

Remember when 15/hour was a lot of money for burger flippers in most of the country?

Now it’s not enough.

Why?

Biden-flation.

“Living Wage” is right there in the title of the article.
You can translate “living wage” directly into it’s inverse relationship with “cost of living”, which is another way of saying inflation.

You can thank yourselves for this.
The bar will never be high enough for the liberals but they don’t get it.

When everyone gets a raise but everyone gets a higher cost of living, the people at the bottom in low skill jobs are still right where they were before

The answer is to stop those that do the heavy lifting to make life expensive . . . and too expensive to be happy about living.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Anyone or thing interfering or hindering any of those is the enemy and should be disappeared from having the power to interfere or hinder.

The “living wage” used to be $10. Then it was $15. Now that’s not enough.

Isn’t it funny how it keeps changing.

BECAUSE WHEN THE MINIMUM WAGE GOES UP, PRICES INCREASE YOU IDIOTS, TO ACCOUNT FOR THE EXTRA COSTS. AND THE PEOPLE WHO’S WAGES YOU JUST INCREASED ARTIFICIALLY ARE NO BETTER OFF, BECAUSE PRICES HAVE INCREASED ALONG WITH THEIR WAGES. SO IT’S A WASH, AT MINIMUM.

Add inflation to the mix and they’re totally screwed.

But keep pushing this “living wage” nonsense, article author.

Nobody explained to the sheep that they would get their $15/hr
from the inflation that caused it.

How do they come up with the round, multiples-of-five numbers like this? It this economically determined? Is the next wage demand,... $20, by any chance?

This was so predictable—and is one reason why once the inflation brush fire gets started it is so difficult to douse the flames.

Everybody in the economy feels cheated and wants more more more....

Union contracts are tied to the minimum wage.

These whiners should start the own business, and pay their employees starting wages of $20 per hour. Until then, you are
know-nothing losers, at best.

We’re back to this again? Living wage, yeah OK. Let’s talk about real wages which for the first time in a half century were on the increase under Trump. Then the globalists again regained power through theft and placed their boot back on the throat of the middle class and working poor.

Maybe we should just make the minimum wage a million dollars and hour and require employers to hire whoever wants a job with them.

Do you think many employers will magically be able to accommodate such decrees?

Economies are not fixed by trying to make them “fair”. They only get more impoverished by such meddling and everybody has to fight over a smaller pie.

“Union contracts are tied to the minimum wage.”

Yes, that’s the REAL reason they’re constantly pushing for minimum wage increases, and why they’re PISSED they haven’t gotten any increases through.

The last thing we need is for construction costs to be ARTIFICIALLY increased on top for the REAL increases (cost of supplies going up due to inflation, etc.).

They’re insidious with these stupid policy proposals.
