An independent journalist in Maui, Hawaii, who flew there to cover the devastating wildfires, claims that he was put in a "headlock" by Maui police for pressing the mayor on the unknown number of missing children and claims the government is hiding the severity of human loss.
"I know at this point that the government has not been truthful about the death toll," Nick Sortor, who traveled to Maui last week, told BlazeTV host Sara Gonzalez. "They’re not talking about the death toll of the children, either," even though "that is what the people here in Maui want to know," he said.
Other footage posted to X by Sortor this week shows him confronting Maui Mayor Richard Bissen repeatedly about the potentially high volume of children who have not been found since the fires began. A man who said he’s with the Maui Police Department then allegedly put Sortor in a "headlock" before saying Bissen is "done" taking questions.
Camera footage shows several seconds of chaos before panning back to the officer. This is when Sorter alleges the physical encounter occurred.
During the press conference, Mayor Bissen said, "I don’t know," when asked about the estimated number of missing kids. When accused of not being transparent, he threatened to end the press conference early.
According to The New York Times, upwards of 1,100 people are currently unaccounted for. Many are feared to be minors. The official death toll is currently 115, but that is speculated to be an underestimate of the actual number given the missing bodies and the portable morgues that have been put to use.
Do you think perhaps ∅bama’s personal or emotional connection to the people of Hawaii is not what it needs to be for him to visit West Maui and have that visit be sufficiently well-received by those people specifically?
Was just thinking about the Arizona Memorial in Honolulu Harbor (Øbama’s old neighborhood):

Now thinking of this place too:
“The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is a memorial and museum in New York City commemorating the September 11 attacks of 2001, which killed 2,977 people, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six.”
(By the way, this memorial is HEAVILY visited by Japanese tourists.)
These kinds of events, sudden, violent, catastrophic, death toll in the thousands, are rare.
A solemn national memorial for the children and others killed in West Maui Firestorm is probably needed.
Perhaps there’s an Oahu/Maui social divide that Hawaiians know about but others typically don’t?

Just think about this reality. There are perhaps hundreds of families that are going through the must horrific and unimaginable pain and suffering humas ever must deal with. I keep hearing the local govt official, thinking they are defending the citizens, saying they will decide how to rebuild. Isn’t the property still owned by the individuals? Why would they not just rebuild? Seems like everybody thinks the land is community property already.

it’s amazing how none of the police died in the fire. Hmmm…
I've watched fantasy movies about ancient times where children were herded into a hut that was set aflame by bad people. Could never happen, right? This Maui reality shows that it can happen, bad "authorities" killed hundreds of kids in flames, by authorizing inhumane actions.
