The only exception I can think of when you do a 4473 and not get a background check is showing a valid ccw license in some states.

The Left wants us to be blamed for every bad member of our type. They get praised for theirs (”victims of systemic white racism” “a country founded to be a location for slavery” “overdue for reparations.”)

Black people have some good and some bad. White and Asian and others have some good and some bad.
That is now a controversial statement in America.

Someone really should check.

The Baker Act provides for observation, so it doesn’t count as commitment. Theoretically, those with true problems can then be committed if necessary. The problem is that there are few long-term care mental health beds available, so they just release them to the families, most of whom have no idea of what to do with them and are sometimes even afraid of them.

I had a friend whose son had a late adolescent psychotic break, was in and out of treatment and Baker Acted twice, never improved, destroyed the lives of his family and finally, after the second Baker Act detention, really did manage to kill himself, which of course devastated his family.

While we need to have safeguards against committal for “thought crimes” or for political reasons, we also need to have good, humane but effective residential mental health facilities - for the protection of the individuals themselves, their families, and society.

I bet if I lied on a 4473, I’d have a different outcome from Hunter ...

We’ll never know ... I have nothing to lie about.

Right. There needs to be more options. Some facilities between commitment for life and jail. If you stigmatize mental health though like cuckoos nest people will avoid it more too. Most mentally ill aren’t threats long term. If there’s one thing I’d support for government to do is find a way to balance this mess going on.

This may have been an adolescent flip-out. No crazier than any other teenager.

I have an Enhanced CWP in Idaho. A 4473 is required, but no NICS check. The Enhanced CWP requires extra training and a more thorough FBI background check. It is unlikely that the FL shooter had a CWP that would omit the NICS check.

Would banning the possession of such rifles and magazines had made a difference? NO.
A man armed with an 1860 civil war era lever action Henry rifle (still available for sale)loaded with sixteen shots could have done the same.
The news media and politicians have popularized the AR-15 just like they did the AK-47, and now all crazies think they need one or the other to commit their crimes.

It’s so easy to lie, a druggie like Hunter Biden could do it.

A druggie democrat like Hunter Biden probably has more trouble telling the truth than he has lying.
