Republican Voters Split Over Trump's Decision to Avoid Primary Debates
VOA News ^ | September 13, 2023 | Matt Haines

Donald Trump skipped the first Republican debate in Wisconsin last month, and the GOP frontrunner has indicated he will not join his party’s second debate in California on Sept. 27.

Republican primary voters are split over whether this strategy will help or hurt ...

...

The former president reinforced his debate-skipping strategy on his social media site Truth Social writing, "The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had. I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!"

It is an approach Trump explained in a June interview with Fox News host Bret Baier in which he wondered aloud, "Why would I allow people at 1 or 2% and 0% to be hitting me with questions all night?"

Despite big leads over all his Republican rivals, there are still some party members who are unhappy with Trump's strategy.

...

"I think he's making a horrible decision by not showing up for the debates," Joseph Johnson, an engineer from Los Angeles, told VOA. "He could very well lose the nomination if he keeps standing on the sideline while his policy gets ripped apart by other candidates."

...

Still, Johnson said he found the Trump-less debate refreshing and appreciated the policy discussions that he believes could not have taken place if the Republican frontrunner "was sucking all the oxygen out of the room with his antics."

A poll by The Economist/YouGov from Aug. 26-29 suggests that even though most Republicans (61%) agree with Trump's decision to skip the debate, the majority hope he will attend the second one. Fifty-seven percent of Republican voters said they think Trump should participate in the event, while just 17% said they did not. Twenty-six percent said they were not sure.

This will become a hotly discussed topic over the next couple of weeks leading up to the September 27th debate. Personally, he should accept terms and participate in the debate. If he wants the nomination, time to start working for it.

Wow! The far-left turd rollers in the RAT “media” sure worry a lot about the Republicans. They never talk about anybody in the Dung Beetle Party.

I’ll grant you they are no “debates” but the last one was enlightening and a bit entertaining. They do serve a valuable purpose.

hehehe he’s earned the nomination. i would just like to see him mop up the others, but he doesn’t need to ... he’s the nominee. so consider me torn... love to see him rule over the rest, but no need to “prove” anything.

I doubt it.

Very few people care about the Snow Brown & the Seven Dwarfs debates.

Democrats aren’t worried about the republicans at all. They just won another special election yesterday. They are racking them up. We used to win back in the day.

One good thing about the Republican debates, we are learning which persons probably should NEVER serve in a Trump administration cabinet, and for certain which ones are totally unfit to be Vice-President under Trump.

Yes, he’s clearly said No. Will he sustain that? What will he do to troll the September 27th debate this time? Maybe a big rally or a trip to the Ukraine or to visit Kim in North Korea?

Yes, and by “split” they mean, the roughly 30% of nevetrump/globalist/Establishment want him there to validate their circus, and the remaining 60-70% who will be voting for Trump could care less about the establishments circus of candidates.

The last debate showed without question Trump did the absolute right thing not attending... what an absolute joke that was.

Folks need to stop calling these nonsensical things debates... they aren’t, not even close. They are a laughable joke.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, what Trump should do is a livestream with Tucker or Joe Rogan during the next debate, where he comments on the “debate” in real time.

Trump’s the nominee, he was the nominee as of Jan 7, 2021, as long as he chose to run... those who believe any other outcome is possible, are a group that largely overlaps with those who believe Epstein killed himself.

Hotly discussed by whom? No one cares. Thr debates have only one goal, derail Trump. Completely pointless for Trump. If the debates had the goal of seeing how people interact under stress, or grt policy out of them or to inform the public that might be one thing. That is just not where the media or the Repuke party is in 2023.

Yes!

And having Kari Lake toss her hat in, and announce that this charade is actually about running for VP, would be awesome.

They are just trying to get a sound bite/viral moment...

They aren’t debates, without Trump on the stage, there is nothing to debate, they are all owned by the same money men who want the same things, and none of it has anything to do with what is in the best interest of this nation or her people.

Tuckers softball interviews not long ago showed exactly what a joke the GOP establishment is... and why TRUMP happened in the first place....

Calling these things “debates” is just an insult
