The Chinese have been getting rich gaming the rules, which is that everyone else follows the rules while they take advantage by not following.
The problem for them is that the US was the primary enforcer of all the international rules. And when the Chinese decides they are going to try to take down the US, they are going to be hit with a bunch of other countries also breaking the rules (such as nationalizing property that the Chinese paid for) with no repercussions because China actually can’t enforce any of the rules.
Yes. We can be energy independent and lithium independent.

Are factual errors mis-information? The fact is that SE OR and the OR-NV border have the largest known store of Lithium in the world. Second largest is in S America.
The fact is that there has not been a big search for Lithium. There could be even larger concentrations we don’t know about due to not looking.
Don’t confuse Lithium with rare earth metals used in computer chips. But there again, there has not been much search. We don’t really know what the future holds.... and that is before Elon Musk starts mining outer space.
SOME of the country may have gone insane; the wealthier half that is buying EVs. The other half is sane enough, although may be afoot if Biden gets his way.
They have recently found huge deposits of it in the USA.
So this is unlikely to be a problem.
BUT, there are issues with the Lithium Ion battery safety. It is complex to charge and discharge.
