HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The official death toll from the Lahaina wildfire disaster has been revised down from 115 to 97 amid new DNA analysis and a painstaking effort to catalog remains, many of which are incomplete and in a very degraded state, Maui police announced Friday.
Of the 97, authorities said 74 people have been officially identified.
Meanwhile, police said the number of unaccounted for stands at 31. Each of those people has a missing persons report filed with the Maui Police Department, said Maui Police Chief John Pelletier.
He added the new accounting helps to paint a clearer picture of what the final death toll will be.
The number of people unaccounted for plus the number of people officially identified equals 105.
“The purpose of this was not to confuse anybody,” Pelletier said, noting that the original list of unaccounted for individuals was in the thousands.
“We are constantly striving that we do this to the best of our ability.”

They were missing only in the sense that no one knew where they were. Turns out they were down the road somewhere having successfully fled the area. No longer missing, and not dead.

That initial count was just people calling in and saying, “My dad lived in Lahaina and I can’t get in touch with him.” So then he’s “missing.” The they turn the cell phones back on, and he’s fine. No longer missing. Not dead.

Assume the worst from these people and you will never be disappointed.
They were floating that 1000 number for at least a couple weeks after. It took them that long to account for those people? That’s crazy.
Before long the numbers will continue to drop, and they’ll claim that only 10 people (or less) were killed. All is well on Maui, Oprah, the Rock, Bazos, and Lady Gaga will all be able to increase their landholdings, and all is well.
