Reagan wouldn’t have any say in this even back then. It’s not government related at all.

My first real job in 1984 found me one of 50 field service engineers (repairmen) for high speed drum dryers, steam fired. We each had a territory spanning several counties in several states. We would meet once each 2 weeks on Friday morning to hand in paperwork. Usually at a hotel.

One of our most arrogant in the crews began stirring up trouble and was trying to get us unionized. The CEO came to our meeting and promoted the guy to a managerial role. He even paid for his office space at a nearby industrial park. Reserved parking spot, nice furniture, and expense account.

30 days later he found the doors locked, and his keys didn't work. His cards were closed, his car was towed away by the leasing company.

The CEO told us we were no more valuable than trained monkeys in our jobs.

Not one of us ever complained after that. Best job I ever had really. This trained monkey had lots of freedom and was paid pretty good considering. I took a promotion to the corporate office in Connecticut after about 10 years of carrying a tool bag. I manned a hot-line for the repair guys around the country for troubleshooting and phone assistance while I produced engineering bulletins and technical manuals.
