Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) will step aside from his chairmanship of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee after his indictment on bribery charges, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Friday, as New Jersey’s governor called for the long-serving lawmaker’s resignation.
“Bob Menendez has been a dedicated public servant and is always fighting hard for the people of New Jersey. He has a right to due process and a fair trial,” Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement. “Senator Menendez has rightly decided to step down temporarily from his position as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee until the matter has been resolved.”
The 69-year-old Menendez came out swinging in his first statement since the indictment was unsealed by Manhattan federal prosecutors, accusing his opponents of conspiring to “dig my political grave.”
“For years, forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempted to silence my voice and dig my political grave,” said Menendez, who has repped the Garden State in the Senate since 2006.
“Since this investigation was leaked nearly a year ago, there has been an active smear campaign of anonymous sources and innuendos to create an air of impropriety where none exists.”

Why should a Dem step down for bribery crimes? That would empty out DC of Democrats.
Must have been someone from the Biden or Clinton crime family--it's one thing to rip off your constituents but skimming money off Joey 'Bananas' Biden or Billy 'Bent Carrot' Clinton's grift ain't gonna be tolerated.

I think you’re on the right track. Probably some kind of distraction. There’s got to be something beneath the surface that’s driving the charges against him. Nothing happens in DC by coincidence.

Exactly what I was thinking too. He is just the designated democrat scapegoat, to make themselves look respectable. More than likely, he is guilty as sin, but this looks like the rats 🐀 trying to convince everyone, that they can be trusted, that they are impartial.

Obama is through with him. He wants to replace Menendez with someone more marxists. There again, he must have pissed off the wrong dimrat power broker somewhere.
Murphy could appoint himself. He’s almost half way through his second term as Governor and can’t run again. He knows that he could be Senator for life.
This is the perfect opening for Trump to completely discredit the RINOs in the Senate.
Without mentioning names, all he has to say publicly is “…Does anybody really believe that Senator Menendez is the only one doing this ?…”.
