I live in booming, growing Florida. Yet many CVS (and Walgreen's) stores are no doubt less than fully profitable. Their non-pharmacy lines of personal care and convenience merchandise seem stale and slow-moving due to better prices from other venues like Walmart and Target. In addition, instead of better prices, CVS and Walgreen's have complicated and off-putting coupon schemes.

It seems that the leadership of CVS at least realize that their merchandise strategy has stalled. They now seem to be adding to their health care offerings with on site vaccinations and simple tests. Who knows, they may develop a more profitable niche.

“CVS and Walgreen’s have complicated and off-putting coupon schemes.”

Exactly. Those CVS receipts make good kindling, though.

CVS recently signed a deal to put their pharmacies in Targets. The can focus on their profitable line and forget about the convenience store stuff.
