Martin Scorsese urges filmmakers to fight comic book movie culture: ‘We’ve got to save cinema’

The storied filmmaker is revisiting the topic of comic book movies in a new profile for GQ. Despite facing intense blowback from filmmakers, actors and the public for the 2019 comments he made slamming the Marvel Cinematic Universe films — he called them theme parks rather than actual cinema — Scorsese isn’t shying away from the topic.

“The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture,” he told GQ. “Because there are going to be generations now that think ... that’s what movies are.”

GQ’s Zach Baron posited that what Scorsese was saying might already be true, and the “Killers of the Flower Moon” filmmaker agreed.

Since most “americans” no longer work, comic books and movies about them have become “wildly popular” among the deadbeats when they aren’t off on the weekly “vacations”.

A typical movie costs so much to produce that the breakeven point requires them to have successful distribution in non-US markets.

Indonesian teenagers are attracted to action movies ... only.

The days when romantic comedies could be profitable are long past.

His idea: “It is better to make movies where the criminals are the “hero’s””. Just a way of life, glamorize killing, theft, bribery, prostitution, etc.
Sometimes we just want to see the good guys be good.

I think Martin Scorsese is both right and wrong on cinema, now hear me out: the vast majority of sequels, reboots, remakes and spin offs are produced just to make money. There’s a whole lot of grey area with the definition of cinema. The theme park roller coaster movies he described are just good dumb fun, nothing more and not to be taken too seriously. In other words, sit back, relax and enjoy them for what they are, just don’t take them too seriously.

I agree. Marty is upset because Hollywood isn’t making the type of films HE likes. 90% of the films Hollywood makes are truly garbage, but it’s no different now than it was 100 years ago when Hollywood went from silent films to “talkies” and then from B&W to Technicolor. Most of the old Hollywood elites were mortified but that was the product the public wanted.

The typical movie customer: a male Indonesian teenager.

He will only watch “comic book” movies.

The grumpy old auteurs need to stop complaining and just make movies. Wes Anderson makes auteur movies, and he never seems to have a hard time getting green lit. There’s lots of room for Scorsese movies, if he’d just stop poisoning the well.

Maybe way too late. There is very little that passes for creativity in Hollywood especially in the writing community. The absolute amount of sheer crap put out is amazing, very little quality out there.

It’s a little tautological, to be honest - what Scorsese is saying is that we have save cinema by making good movies. Well...yeah...

Comic book films are now failing badly in the market, Disney for example with Marvel has not made any money on any of those pictures this year and is losing untold 100’s of Millions. Yet they are still green lighting projects just as Warner Brothers is with DC, all have lost money. Only Universal seems to have figured things out and is making money.

It's more than just economics. Some indy films made very little money but were hugely influential.

The point is that the movie-viewing audience has lost its mind. A real education is now racist.

People have been reduced to a level of intelligence that is only capable of understanding comic books (whether in print or on film).

Comic books were the first things I read in my lifetime. I learned to read and had surpassed the first grade before my first day of school. I learned words like invulnerable composite planet rocket and alien, among a lot of other useful words. The Sally Dick and Jane was supposed to take months but I finished it in minutes. Comic book movies are a culmination of the original stories. I will say that they have been hijacked by the left of late because Truth Justice and the American Way are not conducive for them. I haven’t been able to stomach the grrl stuff where they are good at everything without any training or practice. So maybe he has a point……

May just be me, but I can see a difference between Marvel Comic movie #967 and ‘Cool Hand Luke’, ‘Patton’, ‘Godfather’, ‘Chinatown’, ‘Silence of The Lambs’, etc. YMMV.

The problem isn’t that they’re making umpteen dozen Marvel comics, it’s that those are the only kind of movies Hollywood wants to make.

Personally, I think going to ‘the movies’ is dead, unless you want to see the Superhero/comicbook movies.
