General Motors (GM) has agreed to place battery manufacturing for electric vehicles (EVs) under its main agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, UAW President Shawn Fain announced on Friday.
Fain said the union won’t expand its strike against the Big Three automakers following the the last-minute development in negotiations.
“We’ve been told for months that this is impossible,” Fain said.
“We’ve been told the EV future must be a race to the bottom. And now we’ve called their bluff.”
GM’s commitment to use UAW workers for EV battery manufacturing is a massive victory for the union.

United Auto Workers in China? The leadership of the UAW never seemed to cared about America.
Que a famous red Foreman quote here.
GM has learned nothing and will fail again
So that means when batteries are imported from China they will pay Chinese union wages?
Another reason to avoid US car manufacturers
If anyone is in the car market, it really a good idea to do market research. Lot of “American” cars are not built in America. A lot of “foreign” cars are produced in places like Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina
The “big three” are fossils in the consumer space.
GM needs to order a few 55 gallon drums of KY jelly. The Commie Union Thugs just got another one of what they like to call, “a win-win”.
Which means that GM is going to blow even more money on EVs.
Oh great. UAW produced lithium-ion batteries. What could go wrong?
And the US built Toyotas are not UAW.
For many years the car with the most US sourced parts that is built in the US has been the Toyota Camry. Yeah, it is stylistically boring but it will be stylistically boring for 400,000 miles, or longer, if you change the oil every 5000 miles. And it is not UAW.
Yeah, sure it is. When batteries from China will cost less than half their union costs they will all be out of a job.................
Detroit just shot themselves in the foot.
I guess they forgot about the ‘70s when Japan captured the entire small car market.
This time China is going to do it.
Yeah sure, just keep pushing the prices of those babies through the roof so no one will buy them. You unions are going to destroy yourselves along with your trade.
I’m surprised they don’t consider a spin-off of their battery factory division. Universal battery supply to multiple car makers would drive efficiencies and make repairs and replacements cheaper... Oh, nevermind.
Wow. If you think EVs catch fire a lot, just wait until the UAWEVs hit the lots.
If they even make it that far...
The UAW is engaging in price fixing and extortion. Repeal the 1935 National Labor Relations Act and make labor unions abide by the same laws as everyone else in the industries they hold hostage.
And Tennessee
Oh yeah cannot forget TN
