Fairfax County police want residents to be aware of a robbery scheme called "bank jugging."
According to investigators, suspects scope out people walking to ATMs, banks, and other financial institutions. They observe them withdrawing a significant amount of cash. The suspects then follow the victim as they drive away and park their cars at another location, leaving the money in the vehicle. The thieves then break the window of the car and steal the money.
According to Sgt. Jonathan Epperson, the most recent bank jugging case happened back on Friday, Sept. 15 around 3:13 p.m.
A victim withdrew $9,500 from Wells Fargo on Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield, Virginia. When the victim got back into his car and started driving off, he noticed his tire was flat due to it being slashed. The victim was approached by a Hispanic man in his mid to late 30s, wearing a black t-shirt and carrying a backpack. The suspect advised that he had an aerosol tire inflator kit in his backpack. As the victim was fixing the tire, the suspect stated that he needed another kit and left. The victim checked his car and realized the money, which was in the center console, was gone.

They often get inside help from tellers who alert them to a big withdrawal.
Stupidity and lack of situational awareness will get you jugged every time.
Some victims were accosted in their own driveway after they got out of the car.
You have to withdraw that amount of cash inside the bank.
How do they know unless someone inside the bank informs them???
Sounds like an oddly specific crime.
How many people withdraw vast amounts of cash from an ATM, which comes out as loose bills, and doesn’t immediately put it in their wallet?
ATM limit is $700. Anything over requires going inside.
the tellers count it out right in front of you and everyone.
Would this be considered "baiting"?
Another reason why I always carry.
My bank’s ATMs have a $500 limit on cash withdrawals.
Today, when I go to pull my cash out of my bank account, I make use of the drive-thru ATM so I don't have to get out of my car. Moreover, a cash withdrawal is the last thing I do in an outing. I'm fortunate to have an attached garage, so I can pull in and close the garage door (via remote) before I even open my car door.
Don't depend on any secret compartments that are part of your car. You can bet the thieves know all about them, and will be the first place they look for loot.
Most ATM withdrawal limits are set way below $9,500.00.
I like how the victim took out $9,500.00, just under the Treasury reporting amount.
If you do that and are a conservative, you’d better be careful, they’ll accuse you of structuring.

It varies, mine is $1,000.
I only carry large amounts of cash when I go shopping in Colorado ( cash only) or the dentists office (cash discount).
Yep. That’s the real problem.
Who randomly carries a tire inflation device?
yeah... they had to withdraw that much CASH from inside the bank...so how did they know he took out $9500?
Someone in the bank must have let them know
I have never know a bank ATM to allow a 9,500 dollar withdrawal from an ATM. Sounds like a fishy story to me. While I am sure that this method of theft is real, that amount just sounds false.
Most banks have counter limits of about 2500. ATMs around 500.
A 9500 cash hit would be on a business owner going to make a deposit.
