President Biden on Saturday reiterated his commitment to fighting gun violence on what would have been the late George Floyd’s 50th birthday.
“George Floyd should be alive. He should be celebrating his 50th birthday with his young daughter Gianna, family, and friends,” Biden wrote in a statement. “He deserved so much more.”
“Today, we join his family to honor his life and legacy,” he added. “And we remember the tragedy and injustice of his death that sparked one of the largest civil rights movements in our nation’s history and inspired the world.”
Legislation with his namesake — the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act — is currently stalled in the House, as Republicans and Democrats struggle to agree on some components, including the end to no-knock warrants and qualified immunity.
The bill was introduced in 2021 after Floyd was murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
“George Floyd’s murder exposed for many what Black and Brown communities have long known and experienced — that our nation has never fully lived up to its highest ideal of fair and impartial justice for all under the law,” he argued on Saturday.
Biden signed an executive order with some elements from the bill: including a chokehold ban, restrictions on no-knock warrants and establishing a police misconduct database. The order also reallocated the use of federal resources to state and local agencies.

What does “gun reform” have to do with George Floyd? Maybe if the “reform” made guns less available to career criminals, but when has it done that?
Talk about suck-up.....Biden is desperate.....he’s losing enormous numbers of the black vote to Trump.
What does George Floyd have to do with gun control? He died of a fentanyl overdose. If anything, the subsequent BLM riots reinforced the need for guns for self protection. It’s grating how the left tries to portray Floyd as a saint cut down in his prime when he was really a piece of shit.
I think most folks here would agree that no-knock warrants should have a very limited use. They make sense when a suspected murderer is holding hostages, for example.
But my goodness, how is this federal issue?
Oh, I forgot. Everything is a federal issue now. And on a related note, I wish my township would put up a streetlight near my house. Perhaps Biden could issue an executive order in that regard.

Rand Paul introduced an bill regarding No Knock warrants back in 2020, or 2021; it went nowhere. The passing of the degenerate known as George Floyd had nothing to do with no knock warrants, qualified immunity, or guns, so that bill had better be stalled in the Congress. That being said, no knock warrants and qualified immunity need to be reigned in at the very minimum. Civil asset forfeiture too.
The recent ritual sacrifice and veneration in honor of Saint George of Floyd, back in 2020, would only reinforce my desire to own a gun.
