There was an episode of
Air Disasters on The Smithsonian Channel where a pilot who was about to be fired for faking his proficiency tests smuggled hammers onboard a flight and then attacked the flight crew. He intended to crash the plane so his family could get the insurance money.
The crew eventually subdued him and the captain landed the plane successfully. Unfortunately, the crew suffered brain damage from the hammer attacks and were not able to return to duty.
The guy is serving a life sentence in prison.
