While covering Wednesday’s shootings in Lewiston, Maine, CNN pointed to misleading data and claimed there have been 525 “mass shootings” in 2023.
CNN reported the shootings in Maine “added to a list of 565 reported across the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.”
Breitbart News has previously explained that the figures from the Gun Violence Archive are reached, in part, by changing the definition of a “mass shooting,” thereby allowing drive-by incidents, double or triple homicides, gang violence, and other such crimes to be counted as “mass shootings.”

I think CNN is abusing their First Amendment rights by publishing crap like this.
And, ya know, whenever we see someone abusing their Rights, then ya have to start pushing for restrictions on those rights. So, sensible Media Controls seem in order here. I would take away CNN’s broadcast license — no one needs that much broadcasting power.

Then they start sputtering about manipulation of data themselves. It’s a world of hypocrisy and contradictions to reinforce one’s preconceived beliefs.
Random drive by that wounds 4 = mass shooting… all day everyday in the big blue cities. They only report openly when a white guy takes out a group of innocent folks.

IF there is a mass shooting that kills 7 people-—CNN & others call it “7 MASS SHOOTINGS”.
THEY CANNOT admit that it is “ONE SHOOTING” & 7 victims.

A human has the innate right to say anything they like. OK, CNN is only a corp and not a being. So, perhaps such speech should be prefixed with: “Our CEO says this: lie lie, lie.”
Otherwise, they can say anything.
If they are getting Gov’mt money, that should stop. But, unlikely, since out Gov’mt pays to have primarily black babies murdered.
Face it, you are partially to blame. Why are you watching CNN?
Sure. It’s all in how you arrange the Venn diagrams to categorize these things.
As the Breitbart article demonstrates, the details of the raw data are often the only useful components in many of these “analyses.”
That’s why second (and subsequent) articles based on a study will often cherry-pick the data (and ignore qualifying statements) to support hyperventilating on one topic or another. A big red flag is when the author(s) only want to talk about percentages without citing actual numbers.
If they don’t give a direct link back to the origin article/study/source/etc., there is probably an agenda being pushed.
Hard to believe I have to explain myself, but here goes:
1) I never watch CNN. It’s been decades.
2) The Left ALWAYS wants “reasonable restrictions” on the 2nd Amendment. They don’t care about the Constitution. They don’t care about the Bill of Rights. Somebody does something — the Left rushes out to try and erase the 2nd Amendment.
3) The Left likes to see the First Amendment as absolute. Hey, I agree. I mean: it’s the Constitution. It’s the Bill of Rights. I say: Leave the First Amendment alone.
4) But I like to tweak the Left — somebody does something with a gun? The Left falls all over itself in a rush to treat the Second Amendment like dog crap? Fine — watch me propose the exact same thing to the First Amendment. Let’s treat the First like the Second. How do they feel about that?
Question is: is the Gun Violence Archive wrong for including gang-related drive-bys, or is the government wrong for excluding them?
GVA wants to scare with higher statistics. The government wants to direct concern to one demographic, rather than to another.
