Engineers develop an efficient process to make fuel from carbon dioxide
Tech Xplore ^ | 30 Oct 2023 | David L. Chandler

researchers at MIT and Harvard University have developed an efficient process that can convert carbon dioxide into formate, a liquid or solid material that can be used like hydrogen or methanol to power a fuel cell and generate electricity.

...However, the researchers expect it to be scalable so that it could provide emissions-free heat and power to individual homes and even be used in industrial or grid-scale applications.

These crystals have an indefinite shelf life, remaining so stable that they could be stored for years, or even decades, with little or no loss. By comparison, even the best available practical hydrogen storage tanks allow the gas to leak out at a rate of about 1 percent per day, precluding any uses that would require year-long storage, Li says.

I believe it was Julius Mayer who said it first, but irrespective of who said it first it’s a law that neither Biden nor congress rescind.

It cannot be emissions free because unless all of the precursors and energy needed are “emissions free”. No such thing.

Bingo. Get the grant money and piddle around for 10 years or so and quietly kill the project.

Great, suck all the CO2 out of the atmosphere and starve the worlds vegetation

And then call it "green energy."

EXCEPT FOR, they already are giving out the Billion dollar grants to the States, and Globull warming is solve without cutting down and burying perfectly good trees.

Cutting down trees and burying them is perhaps the silliest idea I’ve heard from the greenies. And there are tons of silly ideas from them.

You still need another energy source. Converting CO2 to fuel will only store energy, not create it.

That has value.

Solar, wind, tide, etc. intermittent energy can be converted to formate and stored for a rainy day.

Depending on your diet, you may have little choice.

A. how much is the energy cost to obtain/manufacture/store bulk CO2?

B. what is the energy cost to convert said CO2 into formate?

“more useable energy must go into the process than comes out.”

JUST LIKE growing corn to make ethanol to blend with gasoline. It’s a net energy loss.

“quietly kill the project.”

You should be able to get 20 years — theoretical research, applied research, bench-scale process development, pilot plant, demonstration plant, then first commercial plant. Sounds like about 20 years and $500 million soup to nuts.

I’m speaking from experience.

“without cutting down and burying perfectly good trees”

Germans and others are cutting down perfectly good and healthy forests to make way for windmills. Honest to God, can there be more lunacy on the face of the earth?

...this has to consume a lot of energy, more than that available from the “fuel” produced...

Actually, God has been doing this for billions of years.

Organisms called "trees" absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and using sunlight as an energy source produce a material called "wood". The wood can then be burned, releasing energy and converting the carbon back to CO2.

Plants which produce materials other than wood can also be used in similar cycles.

The greenweenies want to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere and pump it under ground. How do they intend on pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere? Seems to me it’s another government grant scheme.
