I’ve lived in NJ my entire life, so I know all about it. I had a friend who worked for Bob Torricelli (before the scandal that drove him out). He was a lifelong democrat, and even he was shocked at the depth and breadth of the corruption he saw. Of course, he still votes D to this day.
