I could never understand wanting to be a pharmacist. It’s a five year degree, when you graduate you’re almost a doctor and the best job you can get is as a highly educated clerk

We have a relative who was a pharmacist (”was” is a spoiler alert... :-) ).

She got high on her own supply—got suspended in two different states and then banned for life.

Apparently those pharmacy video cameras actually work!

Why was she a pharmacist?

Because that is where the drugs were.

;-)

Um, graduating pharmacists within the last 10ish+ years are all PharmD’s (Doctor of Pharmacy).

The nature of the pharmaceutical business has changed.

It’s true, now they just count pills.

Drugs are all pre-formulated and packaged.

It’s becoming a bureaucratic job.

It’s no longer a 5 year degree. Today it requires an undergrad degree plus 4 years to get your PharmD to be a pharmacist. It is possilbe to do it without a formal Bachelor’s degree if you have all the prerequisites and good scores on your PCAT exam. But most people getting their PharmD will have 8 years invested in college. You are a Doctor of Pharmacy when you graduate.

Those “highly educated clerks” can easily start their first job at +100k, aren’t on call 24/7 and don’t do a brutal hospital internship. The 4th year of pharmacy school is rotational internships, but nothing like what medical doctors go through. There are job openings for them almost everywhere. It’s a good field for women with children because it allows flexibility with hours in many cases.

Not exactly. Whenever I have a question about a medication, I usually get a blank look from the doctor. I have learned that to really get a good answer, ask the pharmacist.

I have far more respect for them than most ego inflated doctors I know.

“highly educated clerk”

And an unnecessary and expensive intermediary in the dispensing of drugs. How many people actually talk to the pharmacist? You can get more thorough information on the internet.

5 yrs?....5 yrs to get your undergrad degree but most go right on to get their masters and beyond....

and unlike teachers, they must study math, calculus, stats, biology, microbiology, etc etc with lots of labs....its not an easy degree like some..
