MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — The man accused of shooting and killing a St. Jude researcher in a robbery this weekend made his first court appearance Wednesday.
A judge told Marious Ward that the district attorney could pursue the death penalty in his case.
Ward, 24, is charged with first-degree murder, murder in perpetration of a felony, especially aggravated robbery, attempted murder, attempted robbery, and use of a firearm in a felony in the case.
He is accused of killing Alexander Bulakhov, 32, during a robbery Sunday evening on Tennessee Street in downtown Memphis.
Bulakhov was walking with his wife and 2-year-old child when he was approached by an armed man. Police say he was shot when he tried to wrestle the gun away from the suspect to defend his family.
The Bulakhovs were from Russia and had most recently lived in New York before moving to Memphis over the summer. Bulakhov was a postdoctoral researcher at St. Jude and his wife was set to start a job there in December, a family friend said.
Brandy Rucker is also charged in the case, and was in court Wednesday. She also was told the death penalty is possible in her case.
She admitted to driving the car while Ward allegedly robbed and shot Bulakhov. That car helped police trace the pair to Frayser, where they were arrested Monday.

EXECUTE BOTH
I support executing all murderers.
And people who abuse kids.
And rapists.
Spies.
Traitors.
I think that is it.
Oh... Kidnappers. Them too.
You are my brother.
Find a tree and rope.
I believe they should get painful execution, like what they gave out.
It’s only fair.
If you aren’t armed just give the punk your wallet. It ain’t worth it.
Hope they fry this pink but they won’t.
It’s unfortunate that St. Judes is still in that miserable city.
Then said punk went after the wife.
We, the good people, are in danger from the evil ones who are against the death penalty.
Distressingly, more people are abandoning support for the death penalty, some for racial reasons (to protect their own) or due to splashing publicity for the tiny amount of dna overturns. Actually nearly all convictions are upheld.
Pew Research——
Six-in-ten U.S. adults strongly or somewhat favor the death penalty for convicted murderers, according to the April 2021 survey. A similar share (64%) say the death penalty is morally justified when someone commits a crime like murder.
BUT
Phone polls have shown a long-term decline in public support for the death penalty. In phone surveys conducted by Pew Research Center between 1996 and 2020, the share of U.S. adults who favor the death penalty fell from 78% to 52%, while the share of Americans expressing opposition rose from 18% to 44%. Phone surveys conducted by Gallup found a similar decrease in support for capital punishment during this time span.
Support for the death penalty is consistently higher in online polls than in phone polls.

Agree.
Moving from New York to Memphis... huh?
Memphis is a Chocolate City.
Oooh, the DP in the US is sooo scary. There are DP inmates still living and breathing 30+ years.
At the current rate, Memphis would end 2023 with 388 homicides, more than 50 more than 2021, the deadliest year in Memphis history.
Yes. But it appeared that it went out of control after George Floyd riots in 2020.
Isn't that what the dear people who support shipping American Jobs over seas say you are supposed to do?
Just up stakes and move. Every where is like every where else.
Except when it isn't.
The majority residents of Memphis are making it difficult to live within a half tank of gas drive from Memphis. The stench of Memphis is aerating communities nearby with their crime. Small towns within the half tank of gas vicinity are experiencing increased ethnic crime by these hoods. Anyone this close is at risk.
As said, he did give up the wallet. But shooter turned weapon on his wife and kids.
Maybe feared he would shoot them both. Then he decided to act. Maybe if he stood and did nothing, they would've been fine. sad
Every other ad I see on The Old Geezer Channel is for St Jude’s.It’s very, very wrong to kill someone connected to such fine organization.
