Sweden plans new nuclear reactors by 2035, will share costs

STOCKHOLM, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Sweden's government said it aimed to build the equivalent of two new conventional nuclear reactors by 2035 on Thursday to meet surging demand for clean power from industry and transport and was prepared to take on some of the costs.

By 2045 the government wants to have the equivalent of 10 new reactors, some of which are likely to be small modular reactors (SMRs), smaller than conventional reactors.

Energy Minister Ebba Busch said the government was planning a "massive build out" of new nuclear power by 2045.

"It's decisive for the green transition, for Swedish jobs and at heart for the welfare of our citizens," she told reporters.

Countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, and Britain are looking at expanding nuclear power as societies transition to a fossil-fuel free future.

Meanwhile Germany is moving away from nuclear.

SMRs are the future we would have had but for liars on the left.

Sweden voted to get rid of nuclear power in 1980, and has only six of an original 12 reactors still in production.

The current right wing government wants to replace old reactors and expand the fleet to drive the electrification of industry and transport.

Well, if you have to go "green", then at least nuclear is a valid long term option. They just need to quit chasing "the latest thing".

What was “Green” to begin with who were the real business forces driving it using the Left to change public opinion to what end?

Was it to help the nuclear power industry or the wind and solar panel people?

Natural gas is considered “Green” as well.

One thing I know a very rich person the heir to Sam Walton’s Walmart fortune Rob Walton an early signer on to the “Climate Change” Faith.

“SMRs are the future we would have had but for liars on the left.”

I beg to differ.

Well.... incredibly... Greta seem so be supporting nuclear!
I could not believe my eyes when I read this...

Greta has spoken about this and said she’s basically okay with it. IIRC she said something like it was a far lesser evil that fossil fuels.

I actually wasn’t super surprised that she said this. IMO the anti-nuclear thing is a relic of the Cold War. Back then the lefties were anti-nuclear because it was a way of weakening the West, and especially the United States, by undercutting its energy independence. But this kind of thinking doesn’t resonate with younger greenies like Greta the way it did with earlier greenies. And so I predict a shift, where anti-nuke greenies give way to pro-nuke greenies who see it as a legit alternative to evil fossil fuels.

In short, I think the left wants EVs plus the elimination of fossil fuels, and nuclear is the only path that gets them there. The old guard greenies will lose the internal argument against the younger greenies since the old reasons for being anti-nuke are obsolete now.

Yes. I saw a YouTube presentation by the president of Copenhagen Atomics (IIRC), which will use small modular molten-salt thorium reactors. Will hunt for and post link...

Explains the use of “equivalent of two new plants”.

I’ll be interested to see how this progresses.

Sweden has mostly hydro power, which is probably about maxed out. Not much use for solar that far north. Besides which any sane person can see that nuclear is the way to go long term.

As one who spent years as a contractor to nuclear construction, I believe that the mega projects killed by the death of a thousand cuts are over.

I believe that there are in the can at present plans for small nuclear generating plants that are safe, easy to build, relatively cheap and easy.

But I have no basis for that thought other than faith

(Secretly, I really believe that deep in the bowels of the fantastic Tesla engineering capacity, the plans exist )

The opposition to nuclear is dying out as the left is more and more accepting or embracing it.

It only took 60 years for them to start coming around.
