I wouldn’t argue about that. However, the Tribe pitched the original hunt idea to their Fed overlords as a cultural experience. They didn’t have twin screw fishing boats or Barrett Carbines back when the hunt was truly a cultural event.
The Braves were brave and fished accordingly. How does modern tools enhance or continue their “cultural heritage?” IMHO, if they want to teach their “ways” to a new generation, then teach it correctly.
I thought it was a pathetic bloodlust sideshow watching. Besides the fact most people would prefer nobody hunt Whales, I really don’t care unless they start trying to make a Whale meat market, but the waste and the fact that not a single Makah out there that day had ever butchered a whale before and it showed.
