Putin critic Girkin wants to stand in Russia presidential election

An outspoken pro-war blogger who has fiercely criticised Russia's military strategy in Ukraine has said he wants to challenge Vladimir Putin in next March's presidential elections.

Igor Girkin, 52, led pro-Russian fighters in eastern Ukraine in 2014, following Moscow's annexation of the southern Crimea peninsula.

Girkin is in jail awaiting trial for extremism, which he denies.

He said he wanted to disrupt the "sham" poll with the winner already known.

This comment is widely seen in Russia as a reference to President Putin, who is yet to publicly declare that he will run again.

In a letter to supporters published on Telegram on Sunday, Girkin, whose nom de guerre is Strelkov, said: "I understand perfectly well that in the current situation in Russia, participating in the presidential campaign is like sitting down at a table to play with card sharps."

But he said he hoped his attempt to unite patriotic forces would disrupt the Kremlin's plans for the polls in which "the only winner is known in advance".

"This is our chance to unite in the face of external and internal threats," he said.

He can’t be serious.

EITHER he’s a state-approved “opponent” in name only in order to give the appearance of opposition and a “fair” election,

OR he has a death wish.

I’ve been telling you guys.

Putin is the best you can get. He is a moderate. Any possible replacement will be far more nationalist.

And there’s reason this is far more dangerous than with Putin. They understand some things more than the US public.

Russia can win a nuclear war with the US.

They have fallout shelters all over and around their major cities and they are far more spread out over that vast surface area.

They’ll lose 10s of milliions. We will lose 100s of millions.

Simply that.

I hear he's assumed room temperature.

Why anyone believe anything you post about Putin?

You, idiotically, repeated the claims that Putin was dead again within the last week. You've claimed he had blood, thyroid and stomach cancer last year.

You're sick SOB obsessed with hatred for Putin or, perhaps, someone with a homosexual attraction to him that you're fighting desperately to deny.

Regardless, your obsession with him is pretty close to being some form of mental illness.

Cue up Radiohead's Creep. Then lyrics describe YOU:

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

“”””Russia can win a nuclear war with the US.””””

You have a weird vision of surviving nuclear annihilation.

The Russian people would come out of those shelters with nothing to go to, no infrastructure, no civilization or systems for food, medical, energy, transport, work, economy, no institutions, no military, just death and starvation and the few who lived through the aftermath would see that Russia no longer existed and was now being absorbed by other nations, and Russia would be over forever.

His name makes me think of gherkin pickles.

Now I want a couple of slices of spicy bread and butter pickles.

Good luck to him.
