An oil spill late last week could have released up to 1.1 million gallons of crude oil off the southeast shore of New Orleans, near Plaquemines Parish, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard first reported the oil spill Friday after overflight teams saw oil moving away from the Louisiana shore.
On Monday, the Coast Guard said in a press release that the spill was near the Main Pass Oil Gathering’s (MPOG) company pipeline system, which stretches 67 miles. While it was not immediately clear when or where the leak took place, the Coast Guard said MPOG closed the pipeline at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

“Tings Day Happen...”
Tell these Leftist bleeding hearts and Obama to go pound sand when they call for a stoppage in drilling.
Expect gas prices to go up…
In Brandon’s confused dementia stupor, he ordered another pipeline to be blown up? *SNORT*
Don’t put anything past these people...
“Captain drunk or what?”
Pipelines don’t have captains!
From a retired environmentalist friend in Alaska:
Oil is an organic compound that is digestible by organisms. Dumping food into the ocean = a bloom in those critters who can digest it.
Short term problems - oily sea birds and messy shorelines.
Long term problems - oily blobs on the beach to be stepped on by tourists.
Long term gain - continuing boondoggle bucks for the scientific community, e.g. summer tours to the Exxon Valdez site. “BTW, have you noticed there are no press releases detailing the horrific long term damage to the surrounding seabed or terrain? Hmmmm ...”
I was thinking ship haha oops
Went to Galveston on vacation this summer in August. Had a great time except for the oil all over everything. I wore shoes at the beach and the soles were covered in oil. You could actually see beads of oil in the sand. When we went to the touristy part of town, the sidewalks were black from oil. Hate to see what it looks like now.
drop in the bucket that is the ocean... oil eating bacteria will make short work of this..
The beaches near where the Sabine River comes out into the Gulf of Mexico used to be covered in tar balls because the oil leached out into the sand. Sunlight and warmth evaporated the low VOC’s out and left tar. Spindle Top field is not far away.
“You could actually see beads of oil in the sand.”
I was a little girl living in Daytona Beach during WWII. Lots of oil blobs and other things washed up on shore from the ships that were blown up by the u-boats. The Shore Patrol with their guard dogs would close the beach until the bodies were removed.
Just going off of my recollection here:
Obama gave the go-ahead for risky deep-water drilling by British Petroleum in the Gulf of Mexico. It almost led to environmental disaster. Meanwhile, Obama was saying “no” to safer offshore drilling, probably by American companies.
I seem to recall that Joe resurrected deep-water drilling.
A million gallons of oil is insignificant compared to the natural petroleum seepage that occurs all the time.
It can’t be half as harmful to the wildlife as the crap left by the illegal aliens coming up from South America to the Rio Grande. I don’t want to hear it.
Man, I hate to see this. All that beautiful oil going to waste.
They don’t usually oil in gallons. They measure it in barrels. But a million gallons sound so much worse. But I bet the gulf has 450 trillion trillion gallons of water. So it’s going to be on
The standard measurement for oil is in barrels or metric tons. When there is an oil spill it is always reported by the media in gallons there are 42 gallons to the barrel. The purpose is clear. They would much rather say 1,000,000 gallons verses 24,000 barrels. It sounds worse that way.
Nope.
Pipeline release.
A 24K bbl tank, sitting in the refinery terminal, is a small pup-tank for back-up (SSM) purposes.
Yeah...it ain’t much.
