Address of the President of Ukraine on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holodomors
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Official website

Fellow Ukrainians!
Dear people!
Every year at the end of November, a cold shiver runs down our spine. Regardless of the weather conditions and our location. With coldness in our hearts we are all united by a tragic date - the fourth Saturday of November. The Holodomor Remembrance Day. When we feel great pain and anger at the same time, as it is impossible to forget, understand, and especially forgive the horrific crimes of genocide that the Ukrainian people experienced in the XX century.
Men, women, children. Millions of innocent and murdered. Uncounted and countless. Uncounted at the time. When anything but the truth was written in the “cause of death” column. They callously “wrote off” thousands of people, did not consider it necessary to count, did not consider people as such. Countless in total. How many of them, starved to death, simply fell in the field, on the road, in their own yard? How many were not found? How many were not searched for? When the rulers had one need: for everyone to keep silent, and the relatives had neither the ability nor the energy to search for and prove the truth, and then there was no one left to search. How many are there?
No one knows the exact answer to this question. Just like the answers to other questions. How can one want to kill an entire people? To wipe out an entire nation? How can one take away the very last from people? The last food, the last means of subsistence, the last hope for life and the last chance for salvation? Normal people cannot imagine or understand this. But there is something we know for sure. They tried to exterminate us, to subjugate us, to torture us. They failed. They wanted to conceal the truth from us and hush up the terrible crimes forever. They failed. They wanted to confuse us, to mislead us, to make us not believe, to doubt, to forget, and therefore to forgive. They failed. And today, with utmost sorrow and respect, we honor the memory of millions of our people.
Today, as always, at 4 p.m. sharp, we will light the Candles of Remembrance. Many will be with their families, their children and grandchildren. Some of the young Ukrainians will see this candle for the first time. They will ask about it. And we will tell them the story. This candle will tell them a story that they should know, remember, and pass on to their children and grandchildren, who will tell it to their children and grandchildren. And as long as we keep lighting this fire, the memory of millions of our ancestors will not fade. Who were deliberately, premeditatedly and cynically pushed into the embrace of starvation. Because they were Ukrainians. Because they posed an ideological and class threat to the imperial entity, were free people in spirit, and therefore considered dangerous to the regime and its geopolitical intentions. And then, armed groups went from house to house and took away everything that could be eaten. And then the peasants fell to their knees, begging to leave at least some crumbs for their children, but the savages were ruthless. And then grandparents, parents, and relatives quietly “faded away” in front of their families, refusing to eat “so that the children could have more.” And then entire families, generations, streets and villages disappeared. A tragedy with not only millions of dead, but also millions of unborn. A tragedy that today makes us cry and remain silent, so quietly that the whole world must hear it. This is the sound of Ukrainian pain.
The ideologues, organizers, and perpetrators of those crimes have not been held accountable or punished fairly during their lifetime. But this does not mean that we should forgive and forget. Today, the names and biographies of all the perpetrators must be brought to justice. And they bear the punishment of shame, the stigma of their role in world history, the truth that everyone on the planet should know. The truth that today is the least that can be done to honor the millions of victims. Recognizing those terrible acts against Ukrainians as crimes of genocide is extremely important. This is not a formality. This is the attitude of the civilized world to the truth. This is a tribute to justice.
We thank all the states that have chosen justice and recognized it. Recognized it officially. Recognized the Holodomor as a crime against people, against history, against Ukraine. A deliberate crime. Exactly 30 years ago, Estonia and Australia were the first to do so. Then Canada, Hungary, and Vatican City did the same. Lithuania, Georgia, and Poland followed. Peru, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico. Portugal and the United States of America. And when the war broke out, everything became clear to all those who had been in doubt. Everyone saw literally, live, in real time, what modern Russia, which calls itself the successor to the USSR, is capable of. Which enjoys being the heir to the worst crimes and murders of that era. Exactly murders. Attempts to destroy nations. And during these 2 years of full-scale war, almost as many states as since the beginning of our independence have now recognized the Holodomor as genocide. Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Brazil, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Iceland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, The European Union and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Justice is spreading around the world. The world needs to know about it, the world needs to recognize it, the world needs to remember it.
I thank everyone who, together with Ukraine, restores historical truth and justice. Who calls a spade a spade. And who does not allow the names of those guilty of genocide and war crimes to hide behind the lie of alleged non-involvement. 90 years ago, the world could not fully see what was really happening. Now there are no those who do not see. There are only those who choose not to notice. They are few. And there will be even fewer. The truth paves the way. On this path, the world must unite and condemn the crimes of the past. The world must unite and stop the crimes of the present.
In the last century, famine came from Moscow. Now we hear words of denial from there. And every one of these words of denial actually sounds like a confession - they need famine as a weapon for the future. Famine, cold, terror. Every ton of grain they have stolen now, the blockade of each of our cities, every Russian strike against our ports, against Ukrainian grain storage facilities and elevators, every “Shahed” that targets our logistics, and every Russian missile whose trajectory is against Ukrainian life is all the past that has returned since it has not been condemned in time. This is a process where the line of totalitarian Soviet policy and the line of modern Russian policy form the equals sign together. Evil was not stopped. Was not atoned for. And now we are stopping it.
This is a time of historical responsibility for the murderers and for those who chose to be followers of the murderers, who act in the same way as before. And justice is important not in 90 years, but now. Because although there are crimes that have no statute of limitations, justice must be timely. The sentence for evil must be timely. Justice needs living witnesses. Those who will see the Russian evil punished. And those who will tell not only about what our people went through, but also about how our people put a just end to the attempts to destroy Ukraine, to torture, subjugate or exterminate it. Ukraine will prevail. Ukraine will not fade away. Ukraine will preserve itself and the truth. And justice. And the words of one of the most famous novels about the Holodomor, The Yellow Prince: “Their evil will perish, but the truth will never” will become the living witnesses and the living truth of Ukraine, which endured.
May we always remember all our people who died in 1921, 1922 and 1923. In 1946 and 1947. And in the most terrible years of 1932 and 1933, the years of the Holodomor genocide.
May the warmth from millions of candles of remembrance warm millions of their souls.
May they all rest in peace!

Every year, on the Holodomor Victims ‘ Memorial Day, we experience great pain and anger at the same time. From the inability to forget, understand and even more so to forgive the terrible crimes of the genocide that the Ukrainian people experienced in the twentieth century.

We thank all the states that, together with Ukraine, restore historical truth and justice, and all those who call a spade a spade.

The world must unite and condemn the crimes of the past. The world must unite and stop the crimes of today.

“Their evil will disappear, but their truth will never disappear.”

The humanitarian initiative ‘Grain from Ukraine’ has been extended – Volodymyr Zelenskyy following Grain from Ukraine second summit
President Official website
25 November 2023 - 18:59
https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/diyu-gumanitarnoyi-iniciativi-zerno-z-ukrayini-prodovzheno-v-87273

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine” has been extended, with over $100 million already accumulated for its goals. The Head of State made this statement during a meeting with media representatives following the second international summit “Grain from Ukraine” held in Kyiv.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the symbolism of hosting an international event dedicated to stopping Russia in its attempts to repeat the crimes of the 20th century today on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor-genocide of 1932–1933 in Ukraine. According to the President, only together can all nations that value international law resist this evil.
The Head of State expressed gratitude to all guests, foreign partners, and friends for the consolidated and powerful support of Ukraine and for jointly commemorating the victims of the Holodomor in Kyiv.

The President said that the main focus during meetings within the framework of the second summit “Grain from Ukraine” was given to the Ukrainian humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine” and the preservation of our country’s global role as a donor of food security.

“Due to Russia’s aggression in the Black Sea, one of the largest threats to global stability in the past decades has arisen, particularly regarding food supply. This has had consequences in both price fluctuations and the physical shortage of food in the markets of regions critically dependent on the import of grains and other types of food products that Ukraine exports. And this export holds special significance in the global market,” he said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy reminded that since the onset of full-scale aggression by Russia, our country, along with partners, has created Solidarity Lanes in Europe for export, including Ukrainian food. The Danube region is working increasingly robustly and ensuring the necessary export. Ukraine has gradually managed to restore exports from Black Sea ports as well.

As the Head of State emphasized, Ukraine has now united countries around the world to attract the necessary funds to help those who suffer the most from food shortages. In the first year of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, it was able to accumulate $180 million for these needs, with over 30 participants joining. Within the initiative, 170,000 tonnes of Ukrainian grain were delivered to Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Yemen.

“Our position is principled: no one in the world has the right to block free navigation and weaponize food scarcity. The use of hunger as a weapon is an element of genocide policy, and any state that engages in it must be held accountable,” the President said.

As emphasized by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the global moral duty of all states is to prevent anyone from starving in the modern world. According to him, this year, the “Grain from Ukraine” program has been extended, with over $100 million already accumulated.

“This is our shared historical responsibility – to limit Russia’s aggressive potential, protect our people, our states, and help others in the world, including countries of the Global South, gain enough strength to resist destabilization,” the Head of State said.

President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that by hindering the delivery of food, Russia is attempting to intimidate not only Ukraine but also many countries in the Global South and the entire international community. He expressed full support for the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative. “We financially contributed to this initiative last year and have joined again this year,” Edgars Rinkēvičs said.

The President of Latvia also said that his country collaborates with Ukrainian and European partners to ensure Baltic corridors and the use of its ports for transiting Ukrainian food and grain.

“I think it’s very important that we continue to cooperate to alleviate the humanitarian situation worldwide. We collaborate to ensure that Russia cannot weaponize food. It is also very important that we work together in various formats along the Solidarity Lanes through the EU and through bilateral contacts,” he said.

In addition, Edgars Rinkēvičs shared his impressions of the previous night in Kyiv, when he was forced to spend six hours in a bomb shelter due to a heavy Russian drone attack. He assured Latvia would urge partners to provide Ukraine with air defense capabilities.

“The Ukrainian air defense is doing its job. But one message is absolutely clear: we must do everything possible to provide Ukraine with more air defense capabilities, more ammunition, more military equipment, not only to assist on the battlefield but also to protect civilians,” he concluded.

President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset also said that his country is joining the support for Ukraine.
“Switzerland is very concerned about the negative consequences of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, especially its impact on the food security of Ukraine and the entire world,” the President of the Swiss Confederation said.

Alain Berset welcomed Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s grain initiative and announced that Switzerland is joining this program. In addition, humanitarian mine clearing in Ukraine will be a priority, positively influencing the strengthening of food security.

“We have also adopted a decision on an additional package of CHF 100 million for the next few years. This will help increase our involvement in demining efforts and promote the export of grains from Ukraine. It is crucial that grain and fertilizers reach European markets,” he said.

According to the President of the Swiss Confederation, his country will also contribute to documenting the consequences of destruction and the reconstruction process, as well as working towards the creation of an international tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Ingrida Šimonytė pointed out that despite full-scale aggression and all attempts by Russia to block exports, Ukraine continues to feed the world.

Ingrida Šimonytė announced that Lithuania, like last year, is joining the humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine.”
“Today, we provide an additional EUR 2 million, which will reach Ukraine by the end of this year,” she said.

“We are exploring alternative grain export routes, including the Solidarity Lanes and new corridors. We will be ready to increase the transit capacities of our ports for Ukrainian exports, creating another opportunity, a corridor through the Baltic Sea for exporting Ukrainian products,” Ingrida Šimonytė reassured.

According to her, ensuring security, especially food security, on the continent and globally is possible only by defeating Russia, and Ukraine is getting closer to this goal every day. Therefore, Ukrainian partners and allies should not get tired; they must do everything possible to accelerate this victory, the Prime Minister of Lithuania

Ukraine expects additional air defense systems from its partners to protect the grain corridor, Odesa region – President
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

25 November 2023 - 19:26

Ukraine expects additional air defense systems to protect the grain corridor in the Black Sea and Odesa region, and relevant agreements with partner countries are already in place and being implemented. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement during a meeting with media representatives following the second international summit “Grain from Ukraine” in Kyiv.

“We still need a very specific number of systems with a very specific name. The request has been made. We have a positive response when these systems start to protect that region. Because both the corridor and the people there are important. Our people in Odesa region are important to us.

Air defense is in short supply, but... What’s important is that we have agreements, we have a positive signal, and the corridor is operational,” the Head of State said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that despite all the challenges, the grain corridor continues to function, and Russia currently does not exert strong influence on its operations.

“We have a clear corridor and cooperation for its use with Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye. We have agreements with the United Kingdom, involved in insuring this corridor.

Corresponding results should be. I have an agreement with several states regarding the robust escort by Ukrainians, a convoy. We are already receiving appropriate naval boats for this purpose,” the President said.

Additionally, the Head of State said that the volumes of Ukrainian product transportation by rail through Moldova and Romania are increasing.

As part of the Ramstein-17 meeting, the so-called ‘Air Defence Coalition’ of countries has been established to provide Ukraine with a sufficient number of ground air defence for the upcoming cold months of winter. As Russia will definitely try to bring Ukraine into darkness and cold with missile and drone strikes.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the second international summit Grain from Ukraine: Never again should hunger become a weapon against the freedom of people
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Official website
25 November 2023 - 16:23
https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/volodimir-zelenskij-na-drugomu-mizhnarodnomu-samiti-grain-uk-87265

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated in the second international summit of the initiative “Grain from Ukraine,” held on November 25th in Kyiv.

The aim of the event is to strengthen Ukraine’s role as a guarantor of food security, consolidate efforts to ensure global food security, and develop alternative logistics options for the export of agricultural products from our country.

Opening the summit, the Head of State said that on the eve of the Holodomor Remembrance Day, Russia launched over 70 Shahed combat drones on Ukrainian territory overnight.

“Today, on this day of remembrance, such a terrorist attack means that Putin is proud to follow the greatest killers of the 20th century. If he could arrange another Holodomor for Ukraine, he would do it,” said the President.

According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia will keep trying to use food shortages and weaponize hunger. He reminded that on the first day of the full-scale war, the Russian fleet blocked Ukrainian seaports and the food export from Ukraine, which is crucial for the world.

“The stability of the food market is crucial for dozens of countries and hundreds of millions of people across the vast expanse from West Africa to East Asia,” the Head of State said.

At the same time, he emphasized that today’s summit is another proof that Ukraine will not lose its strength and freedom and will be able to defend the global understanding that terror must be defeated.

“I am proud of all Ukrainians who managed to restore security in the Black Sea so that Ukrainian ports could operate again for the sake of global food security and our exports. I am grateful to all leaders and countries present here who are helping us resist Russian terror and protect lives worldwide,” said the President.

According to him, the Ukrainian humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine,” which has already united nearly 40 countries and international organizations, is assisting those nations that suffer the most from food shortages.

“We are providing assistance despite constant Russian terror and ongoing Russian attempts to disrupt our food exports. Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen, Kenya... They have already received over 170,000 tonnes of food thanks to our joint humanitarian initiative. This is a lifeline for millions of lives,” the Head of State said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced that another vessel is being prepared to transport grain cargo to a port of Nigeria, which will help nearly 400,000 people.
“I am confident that this summit, our second “Grain from Ukraine” summit, will make our humanitarian work even more sustainable and substantive,” he said.

The President highlighted that the Ukrainian people, once experienced a terrible artificially induced famine orchestrated by the enemy, particularly perceive the threat of hunger for any other nation.

“Never again should hunger become a weapon against the freedom of people. And anyone who tries to use hunger in such a way, anyone whose terror creates chaos in the food market, must be held accountable before the entire world. Russia must be held accountable. I am confident that it will be,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded.

President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of Switzerland Alain Berset, and Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Šimonytė personally took part in the second “Grain from Ukraine” summit.

President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Guatemala Alejandro Giammattei, President of Estonia Alar Karis addressed the participants of the event via video links. Video addresses were also delivered by President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium Alexander De Croo, and others.

The summit participants discussed collaboration on grain storage and the transportation of agricultural products to recipient countries. Intensifying the involvement of international partners in the initiative “Grain from Ukraine” and expanding the list of recipient countries was also discussed.

Furthermore, the issue of coordination to enhance pressure on Russia to end its food blockade was raised.
As a result of the second international summit “Grain from Ukraine,” a Joint Statement supported by 23 countries was adopted.

“make you feel better?”

Of course. I would think you would have an interest in STOPPING Russia creating a 2nd holodomor as well.

so why can’t Russia win this war?

it’s been 21 months now - that’s 1/4 of a 7-Year War - and Russia is still stuck less than 100 miles from its border, yet has had over 100,000 troops killed

FAIL

Six films that reveal the Holodomor’s tragic legacy on the Ukrainian people

November 25th is the Holodomor Memorial Day, commemorating the events that occurred 90 years ago when the Soviet authorities artificially induced a famine in Ukraine, causing the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Approximately 10.5 million Ukrainians lost their lives during the Holodomor of 1932-1933, as documented by the Museum of the Holodomor in 2021.

The actions of the Soviet authorities in 1932-33 were aimed at the destruction of the Ukrainian nation, involving the confiscation of grain and other food products from peasants, despite significant grain reserves. The USSR exported this grain abroad during the Holodomor, and prevented them from leaving the country, causing the Ukrainian population to starve.

Maps at the ISW show that while Avdiivka remains open to the West, the Russians are at the gates from the north, closing bit by bit from the east, and holding to the south. Looks a lot like Bakhmut did before it eventually fell.
