I didn’t read that with regards to Gilbert & Sullivan, but in a different book about Victorian England. Gilbert would have been well aware of that aristocratic sneer though.

There’s an excellent D’Oyly Carte production, with John Reed, of Pinafore, on YouTube. The NEVER MIND THE WHY AND WHEREFORE hasn’t got the rope pull and ascent bit, but all of the encores are FANTASTIC!
