My only problem with the 'CIA took out Kennedy' is that Kennedy was hardly a shoe-in to win. Since he was killed it's become sort of the standard story that he was a beloved President but he had serious re-election concerns, which is why he was in Dallas in the first place. So if they wanted to take him out they could have published some sex scandal material, of which they surely had a ton, and gotten rid of him at the next election in a year without a shot fired.

LBJ, on the other hand, would have had to act before the election if he wanted a sure route to Presidency without the risk of a humiliating repudiation on a losing ticket as second banana to a President the people had rejected.

But I still think the CIA did it, probably to send a message, and probably with LBJs agreement and some accommodation between them. The coverup doesn't make sense if it was the mafia but if it was CIA and the sitting VP/now President, yeah, that would get covered up bigtime.
