DETROIT (AP) — Less than two weeks after ratifying new contracts with Detroit automakers, the United Auto Workers union announced plans Wednesday to try to simultaneously organize workers at more than a dozen nonunion auto factories.
The UAW says the drive will cover nearly 150,000 workers at factories largely in the South, where the union has had little success in recruiting new members.
The drive will target U.S. plants run by Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo. Also on the union’s list are U.S. factories run by electric vehicle sales leader Tesla, as well as EV startups Rivian and Lucid.
“You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck,” union President Shawn Fain said in a statement appealing to nonunion workers. “You don’t have to worry about how you’re going to pay your rent or feed your family while the company makes billions. A better life is out there.”
The union said that Toyota’s 7,800-worker assembly complex in Georgetown, Kentucky, is among factories with the strongest interest in the union. A Toyota spokesman declined to comment.

Some of the best paying jobs in Alabama are at the auto factories. I don't see much incentive for nonunion workers to pay dues to a union that tries to make their jobs obsolete with the unions supporting the Dims' push to EV's.
That'd be about as dumb as blacks supporting the Democrat Party that pushes for aborting as many blacks as possible. Oh wait.
That'd be about as dumb as women supporting the Democrat Party that pushes for trans men to replace women. Oh wait.
Yup. Simply turn in your brain and do as the union bosses wish.
They just discovered there are a few hundred American manufacturing jobs that have not yet gone to China.
If people think new car prices are high now, just wait.
My 2015 F-150 SuperCrew will be my last "new" car. The 1999 F-150 SuperCab just rolled over 65000 original miles. I put gas in it semi-annually. No new cars for my household.
Hold on to your wallets America! Here come the unions and they’re REALLY greedy this time. They own you.
This is the newly pro-Hamas UAW we’re talking about. I suspect very few non-union auto workers will be interested. And I suspect that the automakers covered by the new contracts will be in financial trouble going forward.
The contracts are paying good money while Toyota tops out at less than half. I rate the chance good.
I do not plan to buy a UAW car.
Nailed it!
Neither do I.
Judging from what I see on the roads and in parking lots, neither do most Americans.
Let the UAW and what's left of the US auto companies work together to build cars people want to buy, and I'll reconsider.
WE GAVE YOU BIDEN, don’t you want to join our union?
I’m sure they can win now, using Mail-in Ballots for vote counting.....
Go after Musk....I dare you...
...”car prices high now,” my first thought, too.
But, I am in the time of life slot whose folks truly wonder if they ever need another car or toy.
I still want to buy another airplane and another boat.
Mrs. Guano, my CFO, just shakes her head.....(I think that is a NO.)
My 1968 Porsche 911 and my 1965 Piper Aztec were sold in the last fifteen years.
Both were sold for a price that was more than the original price!
I sold my 1956 Chris Craft Capri, forty-five years ago and lost money. I still regret that sale.
Would you believe that a 1968 Porsche cost $6,500.00?
Of course, the dollar then had the purchasing power of $7.51 today?
(maybe more because of Slow Joe)
My Harley Fat Bob saved a lot of wear and tear on my 1999 F150. The truck stayed parked while I put 1300 miles per month on the bike. I had a total of 3 bikes in use for my out of town trip. Cumulatively, 60,000 miles accrued on a 2009 Kawasaki Versys, a 2008 Harley XL1200R and the Fat Bob. About 20,000 miles on each bike. That's why the F-150 mileage is low. It was just employed to tow the bikes 925 miles to San Diego, then 925 miles back to Idaho.
