33 years.

This "first light" image from Hubble was released in May 1990, to illustrate the telescope's improved resolution when compared to ground-based observatories. On the right is part of the first image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field/Planetary Camera. It is shown with a ground-based picture of the same region of the sky from Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. The Las Campanas picture was taken with a 100-inch telescope and it is typical of high-quality pictures obtained from the ground.

Can’t they send someone out with a tool box and a laptop to straighten things out?

It looks like your gyroscope has failed. What would you like to do?

My local astronomy club has an image from early in the Hubble days. It’s an image from an “empty” point of space in a little slice sky in Ursa Major. It is awe inspiring how full that area actually is.

If only we we had a manned vehicle — oh, call it a “space shuttle” — so that we could fly a crew up there to fix it.

33 years is way past it’s initial expected service life. But it would be nice if they could get it humming again.

30-year-old iconic space telescope

After 30 years with rapidly changing technology we haven't put up a replacement for Hubble?

The space agency explained via its blogpost that the Hubble Space Telescope entered safe mode on November 23 due to an "ongoing gyroscope (gyro) issue"

Unfortunately, it's hard to find a decent gyro shop in space.

But no worries: Greece Will Be on the Moon By 2022, Greek Space Agency’s Chairman Confirms.

OMG, it keeps going into safe mode, because only one gyro is working out of 4.

there is a working group on how best to boost into a higher orbit, and possible fix it
