US Sen. Kevin Cramer’s son charged with manslaughter in crash that killed North Dakota deputy

The 42-year-old son of U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer was charged Thursday with manslaughter and fleeing an officer after a police pursuit ended in a crash that killed a North Dakota sheriff’s deputy who had just laid a tire deflation device on the road and was taking cover behind his squad car, according to court documents.

Ian Cramer, of Bismarck, was traveling over 100 mph and already had two flat tires when he slammed head-on into Deputy Paul Martin’s squad car on Wednesday, pushing it “directly into Martin’s person and launching him for about 100 feet,” according to charging documents. Martin, 53, was killed.

Ian Cramer is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday on multiple felony counts including manslaughter, fleeing a police officer and reckless endangerment. Court records did not list an attorney for him, and Sen. Kevin Cramer declined an interview after charges were filed out of respect for Martin’s family. Earlier Thursday, Cramer released a statement saying: “We ask the public for prayers for the lost officer’s family and colleagues who serve us every day and are grateful for all they do for us.”

According to Bismarck police, Ian Cramer was driven by his mother to Sanford Health emergency room in Bismarck at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday over concerns about his mental health. When she got out of the SUV, Cramer took the wheel and crashed through a door to get out of an enclosed ambulance bay at the hospital’s emergency department.

One of Sen. Kevin Cramer’s daughters tracked the SUV through a cellphone and alerted authorities.

Over an hour later, a deputy in Mercer County spotted Cramer and the Chevrolet Tahoe in Hazen, a community about 70 miles (113 kilometers) northwest of Bismarck. The North Dakota Highway Patrol said ... a chase then began.

You can’t save your children when they are determined to not be saved.

Wow. Some politicians have rotten children. Trump is an exception.

Mom drove him to the ER over concerns about his mental health. Maybe he had true mental health problems or he OD'd on psychotic drugs.

I feel sorry for the officer he killed, the officer's family, and his family.

Surviving a head-on collision at 100 mph is amazing.

This article has more details and a pic of the perp. He was telling his mother that he wanted to go visit his dead brother. So sad that the police officer was killed.

In this unfortunate incident, it is crucial to emphasize that the matter at hand is, above all, a tragedy for two families and not a national or political issue. It is unequivocally a family matter that warrants the utmost respect for privacy. As with any member of Congress from both sides of the aisle, we must approach this situation with a commitment to maintaining a space free from the influence of party politics. Our collective focus should remain on extending empathy and support to those directly affected, understanding that compassion knows no political boundaries.

I know a guy who works for an ambulance service. He says that he’s seen many accidents where a drunk or high driver survives, but nobody else does.

Maybe that’s because the drunk is looser, and more relaxed. I dunno.

Looking at the cheeks and nose, I’d guess he has a bad cronic drinking problem. The actions in the article would also be a clue to that

“cheeks and nose” — they do give it away, don’t they? And a long-term problem, too.

The senator’s statement basically says this without saying it and he wisely did not distract from the tragic loss to the family and friends of the officer.

Wondering if there is a history of methamphetamines with the sun. Makes the brain deteriorate into a mushy breeding ground of psychosis.

Sounds like Senator Cramer, and probably his wife, were a bit too ‘career oriented’.

Not a political party issue it’s a political power issue.

It’s surprising that they didn’t put Cramer’s party affiliation in the first sentence, since he is a Republican.

Some real tragedy in the family:

Cramer and his wife Kris have five children[107] and five grandchildren as of 2018.[108] Their son Isaac died in 2018 due to complications of alcoholism. They had earlier adopted the young son of an ex-girlfriend of Isaac’s, who had been killed by her abusive husband.[109]

Alcoholism is a disease that can run through families.

Both Trump and Biden families are prone, which is why neither of the last two presidents drink.
