Here’s an option
Downsize the military by bringing troops home from around the world and return focus to preserving the homeland instead of playing global policeman. There would be significant budget savings from this course of action as well. Let other nations pay for their own defense or choose to become subjects of their neighbors if they choose not to defend themselves.
Increase the pay and benefits of enlisted personnel in the downsized professional military to make service more attractive. Include more options for vocational skills training as a benefit to make temporary military service more attractive to young people. I.e. sign up for the army for 5 years and leave with the equivalent of a 2 year vocational program and marketable skill in the civilian world in auto mechanics, electronics, CPN, plumber, electrician, X-ray technician, carpenter, metal worker, aviation mechanic etc.
Reactivate the draft for 2 or 3 year compulsory service and give draftees a choice between compulsory service at low pay with no skills training or a one time chance when drafted to sign up for the 5 year higher pay plan with skills training.
That would help our country so much that we know it won’t happen....
