Oklahoma City residents will head to the polls Tuesday to decide whether the city will use at least $850 million in taxpayer funds to build a new downtown arena.
The arena would be built at a minimum cost of $900 million, with the majority of funds coming from a 72-month penny sales tax that would start in 2028 if approved by voters Dec. 12. The Oklahoma City Thunder also would contribute $50 million, and the city would use $70 million in MAPS 4 funds.

To entertain people with a loud and proud message of blaming white people for everything under the sun.
Well, they are probably better off there than still being in Seattle.
As i read the article, it made no mention of whether the thunder have threatened to leave OKC if they are not given what they want.
That seems to be the MO is so many cities. It’s particularly true in Minneapolis-St Paul.
But I will give OKC one thing though. They are at least holding a referendum. back when monies were approved for new stadiums for the Twins and Vikings, those groups told the legislature that if the referendum requirement was left intact, it’d be a dealbreaker for them and they’d leave. They pushed hard for the referendum requirement to be waived and sadly enough, a great deal of republicans voted for that amendment.
In the next election, we primaried a few of them and sent a few packing - but by that time the damage had been done.
They don’t have a place to play now? Sports welfare? VOTE NO! HELL NO!
It is a negotiating tactic often seen. Teams declare that the existing stadium or arena is outdated , and that they require a new stadium or arena. And the implication is that the team will move to another city without new facilities.
And sometimes teams have moved when not given a new stadium or arena
And often we are told that these sports facilities will generate additional economic activity, aside from sports. Whether that actually happens is never talked about much.
At least the taxpayers are getting a chance to vote on it.
Here in Georgia, Kemp, his crew and county commissioners just throw it in everyone’s lap, after keeping it all a secret. Then try to tell everyone how great it’ll be.

Name it BLM arena and Coke and McDonalds will build it.
What’s not included in the billion or so going for the arena will be the typical billion or so needed for infrastructure improvements and upgrades. Streets, sewers, water mains, electric...it all has to be upgraded to meet the needs of the new facility.
