Under pressure to revive the U.S. economy in his bid for reelection, U.S. President George H.W. Bush asked for help from then Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa at their meeting in 1992, according to diplomatic records declassified Wednesday.

In the one-on-one meeting in Tokyo on Jan. 8, 1992, Bush pushed Miyazawa for an agreement on a concrete numerical target regarding exports of U.S. auto parts to Japan, as the two economic powers were embroiled in fierce friction over trade, according to the records compiled based on an account by a senior Japanese diplomat who was at the talks.

At the time, Bush was struggling to pave the way for his second term, with his support rate falling under 50 percent. His trip to Japan in 1992 focused on whether he could win concessions to rectify the United States' trade deficit with Japan, which included autos, to help the U.S. economy recover.

Is this the time that H.W. Bush "tossed his cookies" at a Japanese Banquet?

The difference with Bush and Biden is that Bush was not trying to bribe the Japanese into a deal, only trying to improve the marks of his foreign policies. We can wonder what birbes with foreigners Biden is working on right now.

HW narrowly missed being eaten by the Japanese after he was the only survivor of his crew to survive, his friends on that mission weren’t so lucky, and Japanese officers fed on their flesh, while we all know he was rescued by a submarine I didn’t realize that he spent a month on that sub.

“In the one-on-one meeting in Tokyo on Jan. 8, 1992, Bush pushed Miyazawa for an agreement on a concrete numerical target regarding exports of U.S. auto parts to Japan,...”

This “free trade” @sshole deserved to lose.

He was happy to outsource US jobs.

But then when the results threatened his pathetic political career, he crawls off to Japan to beg for secret protectionism, and pukes on his shoes to boot !

Four years of the Bush Presidency was more destructive than anything Clintigula ever did.

1990 Clean Air act, 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, 1991 Civil Rights Act. All three are used daily in 2023 by the Administrative State to regulate CO2, ban gas stoves, mandate gender transitioning, discriminate against whites.... and on and on...

Name one thing Clinton did that had longer lasting effects of any of these ?

An important lesson for conservatives. “Conservative” Mulroney (doubled immigration) was Canada’s most destructive Prime Minister until Justine, and Bush 1 the most destructive US President until Biden.

But “conservatives” get distracted by the rhetoric of these clowns and ignore what they do.

Well said. I suppose the one thing more destructive that Clinton did was to replace SCOTUS Justice Byron White with Ruth Ginsberg.

Maybe. But if you look at the big Court cases that Ginzberg voted on, how many would have been different if it would have been someone like Byron White, instead of Ginsberg?

The big rulings that really changed things. Obamacare, gay marriage, 2020 election fraud required Republicans to make them happen.
