Ron (I think he’s done a good job as Gov.) is the perfect example of the first rule of national politics: Trust no one. It’s bad enough at the state level, but when you run for national office, especially Pres, everyone has their own agenda. If it aligns with the candidate’s the campaign can run pretty smoothly, but when you have lots of conflicts internally it’s a pretty big hill to climb. Ron evidently did what he thought he should do, but took advice and instructions from establishment people who had their own agenda. When their advice turned out to be crap and he struggled, they threw him overboard and bought Haley. I hope Ron is much smarter going forward. He should go ahead and endorse Trump, go home, lick his wound, and plan for his future.
I have said this before.
Ron DeSantis got tea-partied.
Allow me to explain.
What he did in Florida, while very beneficial to the residents, was something that the deep staters could not tolerate.
He had to be destroyed.
But how?
He was a shoo in for President Trump’s VP, and heir apparent to the Trump Train.
He had to be destroyed.
What he did in Florida could not be allowed to be replicated.
He had to be destroyed.
So the bush league chamber of commerce worshipping republiCAN’Ts started whispering in his ear.
They brought him gifts.
They gave him money.
They promised him the presidency.
And then they destroyed him.
He couldn’t be elected dog catcher.
Deep state mission accomplished.
Poor candidate
Poor judgement
Poor decision making
Poor campaign slogan
I adored my ex-Governor, Scott Walker (R, WI) but he, too, was NOT ready for Prime Time when he (ill-advisedly, IMHO) ran against President in Exile Trump.
An excellent Governor for Wisconsin, who put up with a LOT of flat-out EVIL from the Socialist Democrats in our state.
But, just not ready. YET! :)
I would add, his ego. Instead of listening to the Never Trumpers and RINOs, he could have taken the high road and supported Trump with a goal of making VP or positioning himself for 2028.
The “experts” told him that Donald Trump would be in jail and that DeSantis would be the savior candidate.“
I don’t think so, he did not conduct his campaign like he thought that. He could have been the perfect revenge candidate but he started sounding like Pelosi complete with MSM talking points and sabotaged his chances of taking on that role.
What went wrong?
Nothing went wrong. Conservatives prefer Trump.
He knowingly lied to the people of Florida when he told them he would complete a second term, because he already knew at that time, that if he got re-elected as Governor, he was going to run for President. Then 7 months later, although losing traction in the polls each week and month that has passed, he’s fallen to the bottom of the list, and has stayed there, all the while continuing to draw his Governor’s paycheck, only because he made sure he had the law changed, so he didn’t have to resign to run. That’s what went wrong. And he did it all himself.
DeSantis didn’t read the room.
It was the height of stupidity for ANY Republican to challenge President Trump, the popular incumbent Republican President who had just had his second term STOLEN from him! How stupid is that?
It’s literally like watching while your friend is getting mugged, to see if there is an opportunity for you to end up with your friend’s wallet.
All this time, these Republicans should have been fighting with President Trump, to get him back in the White House - not challenging him!
The only one I’ll give a pass to is Ramaswamy, because he supports Trump every chance he gets, and I don’t get the feeling he is really challenging him at all for 2024 - either he’s hoping to get picked by Trump for VP or cabinet position, or he’s seeking name recognition for 2028.
He was already a little Beach, but hid it to get elected and re-elected. Leopards don't change their spots. DeSantis was only as good at his Republican controlled State Legislature made him look. If he'd been elected with a Democrat majority, even in one of Florida's Legislative Houses, nobody would have heard of him.
I think the wife was a big part of the problem.
If DeSantis ran the same campaign in 2028 he would have been just as much as loser as in 2024. People can imagine anything they like about someone, create a persona out of thin air. The DeSantis meme is exactly that. When the real person emerges there is repudiation & pushback. The whole “best Governor” is just such a meme.
DeSantis came into a state that was doing well & had advantages. He was supported by a Republican legislature & took credit for their accomplishments. He is at BEST an average governor considering he ran for office and started his presidential campaign & book tour as soon as he was reelected, spent his constituents’ money on campaign related expenses and was out of state for weeks at a time. His ballyhooed COVID performance was again average.

FLorida has a lot of problems now, we were considering getting a place there, but seeing the insurance situation, we backed out.
Hubris. He should of waited until 2028, now he is F’ed forever.
The second Alvin Bragg became Trump’s campaign manager, the primary was over.
This is an almost unknown situation (Grover Cleveland), a candidate who has already been president, yet isn’t an incumbent. Also, typical campaign experts have no idea how to run against Trump. You have to ignore him and talk about your own ideas. Especially in a primary race.
“It’s literally like watching while your friend is getting mugged, to see if there is an opportunity for you to end up with your friend’s wallet.”
...while saying your friend is at fault because he provoked the muggers...
;-)
And he mislead quite a number of people into thinking he was a Navy Seal by constantly repeating the line he was attached to Navy Seals in Iraq knowing people wouldn’t dig too deep into what his job was.
At the first Republican presidential primary debate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis touted his military experience, saying he “was assigned with U.S. Navy SEALs in Iraq” and “deployed to Iraq alongside U.S. Navy SEALs.”
That’s accurate: He was a Navy lawyer who advised a SEAL commander.
