My 15 year old Jack Russell/Rat Terrier passed on Nov 26th. Very hard on the household (humans and pets). As for the ungrateful children...perhaps there is a common theme of bad behavior in that generation. The only time you hear from them is when they want money. Frankly, that is coming to a screeching halt. I hope your situation resolves soon.
