US helicopters sank three boats carrying Houthi gunmen who attacked a container ship that was transiting the Red Sea, the US military said Sunday.

A US warship also shot down two ballistic missiles fired from Yemen, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

It said that at 6:30 a.m. local time, the Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned and -operated container ship issued a second distress call after earlier reporting that it was hit by a missile.

The Houthi's received some pushback today. I wonder how Iran will respond to this little spanking.

Why would the U.S. even care? These aren’t American cargo ships.

The Iranians will respond by asking ValJar for more money and she will tell JoJo the Pedo Clown to put down the oatmeal and pudding pops for a moment and send another billion or two to Tehran.

Very little pushback. But the message to the Houthis is that we ‘might’ spank you if you continue to be bad. The message needs to be that we will utterly destroy you and all of your home emplacements if you show your faces on the Red Sea. That is a message they would understand.

There are no U.S. cargo ships there, which should make anyone wonder why the U.S. Navy is there in the first place.

You are most likely right considering the change in what passes for U.S. leadership these days.

--- "Why would the U.S. even care? These aren't American cargo ships."

One observes what is missing from the article, which mentions the"Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned and -operated container ship."

What was being shipped, from what country and to what country. Uncle Sucker is picking up a large part of the expense, but what country's "shipped goods" is protected by US military assets?

All the talk about "collective action" is obfuscation, when the US is doing the actual confrontation with air resources.

Freedom of navigation is in our strategic national interests. It is part of the USN’s mission statement.

The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

Underscored by its geographical location, the U.S. relies heavily on ships to secure the trade flows between itself and its partners. Nearly 69 percent of all the goods traded by the U.S. are transported via waterways, predominantly by seagoing vessels.

Iranian-backed Houthi small boats attack merchant vessel and U.S. Navy helicopters in Southern Red Sea

On Dec. 31 at 6:30am (Sanaa time) the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU issued a second distress call in less than 24 hours reporting being under attack by four Iranian-backed Houthi small boats. The small boats, originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, fired crew served and small arms weapons at the MAERSK HANGZHOU, getting to within 20 meters of the vessel, and attempted to board the vessel. A contract embarked security team on the MAERSK HANZGHOU returned fire. U.S. helicopters from the USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69) and GRAVELY (DDG 107) responded to the distress call and in the process of issuing verbal calls to the small boats, the small boats fired upon the U.S. helicopters with crew served weapons and small arms. The U.S. Navy helicopters returned fire in self-defense, sinking three of the four small boats, and killing the crews. The fourth boat fled the area. There was no damage to U.S. personnel or equipment.

Why would the U.S. even care? These aren’t American cargo ships.

Because the world economy is supported by Pax Americana?

Because U.S. prosperity depends, in part on the world economy?

Because freedom of the seas is an integral part of the world economy?
