Ukraine’s new year may end with a brutal Western betrayal
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | January 2nd, 2024 | Robert Clark

Posted on 01/02/2024 8:41:26 AM PST by Mariner

Ukraine entered 2023 filled with hope. Its forces had just secured enormous battlefield and strategic victories, first at Kherson and then Kharkiv, recapturing much lost territory from the Russian invaders, and Western capitals seemed increasingly confident that victory could be at hand.

By the end of January, European and American leaders were no longer talking about whether to send Western main battle tanks, but how many and when. Britain led the charge, confirming that the formidable Challenger II would be sent to Ukraine, and putting intense diplomatic pressure on Washington and Berlin to follow London’s lead. Both duly buckled. With tanks secured, hopes were high for the coming counter-offensive.

The mood in 2024 is very different. The counter-offensive failed to deliver a decisive blow to Putin’s forces in the south. Russia’s economy has withstood Western sanctions, rapidly militarising to provide an ongoing stream of munitions to the front. Ukraine, meanwhile, is undergoing one of the largest aerial bombardments since the war began, and its united front is beginning to fray as conscription takes its toll.

Only a few short months ago, the stoic Ukrainian defenders were heralded by the West as defenders of the liberal values and freedoms we enjoy. Today, Western governments are now beginning to signal a lack of patience, and with it a lack of military and economic support to Kyiv.

To turn our backs now on the Ukrainian people, so swiftly after months of brutal fighting, is morally bankrupt and strategically negligent.

It was inevitable from the onset.

The US never had any critical interests at stake, and the interests Europe had were subject to fickle and weak Europeans.

But it didn't matter to Ukrainians as they were hearing what they wanted to hear.

The Ukrainians were used like prostitutes by the Neoconservatives to beat up Russia for them.

The Jihadists were used by the Neocons in Syria and Libya before that by the likes of Hillary Clinton.

Republicans must break with the Cheney-Bolton-Lindsey Graham-Nikki Haley Neoconism as well.

Well that presumed betrayal would certainly be in keeping with American history post WWII. How many foreign leaders have we assassinated say, since Ngo Dihn Diem? How many countries have we betrayed and walked away from?

Exactly.

If they want to view it as a betrayal, that is their business.

“The Ukrainians were used like prostitutes by the Neoconservatives to beat up Russia for them.”

For this to be true then your dastardly ‘Neocons’ had to set a trap for Putin & Ruzzia. And then your Ultimate Supreme Soviet Leader Putin had to be stupid enough to fall for the trap and then spend two years watching the “best army in the world” get bloodied by an army that’s led by a ‘globohomo’ Jewish comedian.

That’s a hell of a lot of failures on the part of your hero in the Kremlin!

Now explain to me why you think someone as criminally inept as Putin is going to be able to turn this crapshow of a war into a victory?

Just because someone demands we send them money, that doesn’t mean it is a “betrayal”.

We have plenty of stains on our national conscience ranging from the Yalta Agreement, Operation Keelhaul, the disgusting betrayal of Draza Mihailovic, in Yugoslavia, the craven betrayal of South Vietnam when we let the Communists take over after signing the Paris Peace Accord, the Shah of Iran, and on and on.

This is no betrayal, no matter what Ukrainians think. We had NO business being involved there, and we sure as hell shouldn’t have been borrowing money we don’t have, against our great grandchildren and sending it to them.

We have plenty to be ashamed of in our history, but this crap is not one of those things.

The coup of 2014 backed by Victoria Nuland of the Obama Administration speaks for itself.

That coup in Ukraine got a rise out of Putin he annexed Crimea and backed the Donetsk and Luhansk Russians in eastern Ukraine.

Their war with the Anti-Russian coup installed Ukrainian regime went on till February 2022 when Ukraine went on offense against the separatists triggering the Russian military action in Ukraine.

That’s all folks as Porky Pig used to say.

Nice dodge.

That does not explain how Putin is going to claim victory when for two years all he’s done is to get more and more Ruzzian men pointlessly slaughtered in Ukraine.

May end????

With O'l 10% Joe, you get exactly what you bought. A "C" undergrad from a tier 2 law school at the bottom of his class, who has more plagiarized work out there than Claudine Gay, spinning international policy like Spirograph strategists.

Who betrayed Ukraine? How many of us had any say before our money was taken for it?

I agree with most of your post, however, I think we committed a lot of (borrowed) sovereign treasure and likely many more promises to Ukraine. Everyone said Ukraine would surely be the victor and flew Ukrainian flags everywhere in support of what the administration stated. For months every politician pledged to stand by Ukraine and send yet more billions. This is a disgrace. This administration deliberately scuttled any possible peace discussion or negotiations because they wanted Ukraine to fight to their man, as if 500,000 were not enough.

Thank you for your civil post, Obadiah. As you can probably tell, the heat of my post was not directed at you.

I don’t think our government should have made ANY promises they did, which the American people neither supported nor can afford.

I agree with you there. Should never have made them any promises that came from the Biden Administration.

It was good while it lasted, but it’s not at all unusual to turn away from one profit one center to focus on others.

I stated the facts to you if you choose to distract with some argument about Russians dying in Ukraine I need to bring it right back to you.

What I need to bring back is that Russians are dying but at least Putin tells them and many believe they are dying for Russia, for Russian people who live in territory the Soviets defined as “Ukraine”.

I read all three volumes of Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago” in the 1970’s and he spoke about Ukraine saying he figured the folks there wanted to be part of the country an obvious reference to all the Russian speakers Russian heritage on the territory the Communists made into Ukraine.

It would figure that some Hillary Clinton underling like Victoria Nuland would see Ukraine the way Lenin and Stalin saw it.

Russians are dying for Russia.

Ukrainians are dying in vain.
