Amid Gaza war, spot container shipping rates soar 173% on Red Sea diversions

Suez traffic is down 28% in the past 10 days. Also, the commercial Suez Canal traffic reportedly downed almost 60% since the Houthi attacks began in response to the Israeli war on Gaza.

Short-term rates for container shipping between Asia, Europe, and the US are climbing on reduced capacity caused by the ongoing threats to cargo vessels in the Red Sea.

The spot rate for shipping goods in a 40-foot container from Asia to northern Europe now tops $4,000, a 173% jump from just before the diversions started in mid-December, Freightos.com, a cargo booking and payment platform, said late Wednesday.

The cost for goods from Asia to the Mediterranean increased to $5,175, Freightos said, adding that some carriers have announced prices above $6,000 for this route starting in mid-January. Rates from Asia to North America’s East Coast have risen 55% to $3,900 for a 40-foot container.

The Houthis need to feel steel.

Otherwise, the shipping lanes in the Red Sea will be permanently blocked.

This is just another proxy war by Iran against Western Civilization.

This sort of proxy war will continue so long as the West fails to address the source in Tehran.

Someday, it’s gonna get out of hand. See Gaza for a limited example.

The good guys need to start blowing those inbred bastards out of the water as their pirate ships approach. Send the message that they will die if they try this and soon the problem will disappear.

My theory is that Biden is going to wait until the election nears. Then he will strike at the Houthis, just to show how tough he is. In the meantime, he’s content to let the crisis continue.

And when I say “Biden” I mean Biden’s handlers. I doubt if Biden himself knows what a Houthi is, where they are, or what they are doing.

"Uh, what's Yemen? Is that a new flavor of ice cream?"

“Uh, what’s Yemen? Is that a new flavor of ice cream?”

Yes, it much like the Saudi flavor across the border, but has less sugar.

Just wait until the first tanker is sunk in the PG by a USV...

People in my sphere keep commenting about the low gas prices; I keep responding, “Take a picture.”

It’s weird, human psychology. Some people will naturally gravitate to confirmation bias to irrationally benefit a positive emotional reaction even in the face of all the signs which portend “get prepared”...

...yet those same people will later lapse into lifestyle disease coma, wondering, “Why didn’t anyone warn me???”
