Tucker Carlson broke the news on X, saying:
"Gonzalo Lira, Sr. says his son has died at 55 in a Ukrainian prison, where he was being held for the crime of criticizing the Zelensky and Biden governments. Gonzalo Lira was an American citizen, but the Biden administration clearly supported his imprisonment and torture. Several weeks ago we spoke to his father, who predicted his son would be killed."
It was just over a month ago that Carlson interviewed Lira's father.
Lira had been critical of the Zelensky regime in Ukraine and had spoken out against the war that was being waged against neighbor Russia, saying that the efforts by Ukraine and the US were fruitless and wasting lives in a losing undertaking. In their announcement of Lira's detention, Ukraine issued a press release claiming that Lira was "one of the first to support the Russian invaders and glorify their war crimes." They claimed that he had "engaged in discrediting the top military and political leadership and the Defense Forces of our state."
In other words, he was arrested and detained for his political views and commentary. When he was arrested, the Biden administration would not commit to helping the American citizen get out of jail, despite being the major funder of Ukraine's government and war effort.
Elon Musk commented on the matter, asking if there were some reason other than criticizing the Zelensky regime that justified locking him up. "An American citizen is in prison n [sic] Ukraine after we sent over a $100 billion?" Musk asked on X. "Is there more to this story than simply criticizing Zelensky?"
Musk remarked, "If that’s all it is, then we have serious [sic] problem here." Musk tagged Zelesnky, asking him to "please educate the American people about this matter."

I agree with Lira on most of his views on patriarchy (the ‘manosphere’) and I also agree with many of his highly critical views about modern women. His views on damaged single women in their thirties is vastly cynical but sadly accurate.
He’s very likely been burned a few times in his relationships with such women.
I can understand his personal attraction to the patriarchal society that Putin wants to build but has yet to attain. Putin will never establish true patriarchy until he outlaws abortion and birth control. He also has to revive the faith as a true faith in Jesus and not just a politically safe space for hopeless proles to hope for hope (as it has always been in Russia).
There’s no indication that Lira worked directly for Russia or took a paycheck from them.
He may not actually be dead so like with so many other reports of demise in Ukraine & Russia these days I’ll wait for confirmation.
Imprisoned him?
Tortured him?
Killed him?
Well, that is what totalitarian regimes do, both of them.

I disagree with the man on his Russia vs. Ukraine/Moldova/Georgia/etc. views but on social issues like patriarchy I think he’s spot on.
He’s an odd duck though. He leans Latin American socialist in much of his politics but then advocates patriarchal social order - which the left adamantly opposes.
He is/was definitely an independent thinker who is willing to stand up for his beliefs. That alone makes him admirable.

He was the one opposing nationalist socialism in Ukraine and hauled off to prison for pointing out all the abuses of the Ukrainian government and failures of the proxy war in Ukraine.

Sounds vaguely familiar to the early murders of political prisoners at the newly opened Dachau prison in Nazi Germany. You were beaten to the point where the only thing you wanted to do was kill yourself to end your misery. Or, if you weren’t quite ready to put a noose around your neck, the guards would give you a hand at finishing the job. Then of course, you could be shot in the back of the head at close range, and the guards would claim you were trying to escape.

“Latin American socialist” is not what you think. Even Milei in Argentina is a Latin American socialist. Most of them are to one degree or another.
