Lincoln Project founder calls the Republican primary a 'Kabuki dance' and says Donald Trump will be the GOP nominee on March 19: 'That's the ballgame'

Rick Wilson, one of the founders of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, called this year's Republican primary a 'Kabuki dance' and predicted that former President Donald Trump would be the 'inevitable' nominee on March 19.

Wilson sat down with reporters ahead of the Iowa caucuses Saturday night at Des Moines' famed 801 Chophouse and laid out why he thought Trump's rivals - former U.N. Amb. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis - had no chance.

Wilson added that there are a 'lot of Republicans who desperately wanted that not to be true.'

'I wish there was better news about it,' he said. 'He's going to wrap this thing up. No amount of spin on the behalf of Nikki or Ron or anyone is going to change the fact that 40 percent of the Republican base will set themselves on fire for that man.'

This should be it for the republican primary....

While some people may still ante up money, because they still think the rnc or someone will keep Trump off the republican ballot, a significant nevertrumper group has thrown in the towel...

“No amount of spin on the behalf of Nikki or Ron or anyone is going to change the fact that 40 percent of the Republican base will set themselves on fire for that man.”

Actually Rick, I’m even more willing to set you on fire.

“Wilson added that there are a ‘lot of Republicans who desperately wanted that not to be true.’”

Other than the Ukraine Cheerleaders here (who understand that the war will end shortly after Trump takes office), I don’t know of many Republicans who want the above to be true. But I hang out with the ‘wrong type’ of Republicans, the ones who think that Trump should have another term.

I’d say the percentage of hard core Trump supporters is greatly underestimated by most of these people and the media...

Because it scares them, how much of the ‘republican’ party, have become the MAGA/America First party and will do anything for Trump.

a significant nevertrumper group has thrown in the towel...

Thrown in the towel...for what? They're going to work to elect Democrats up and down the ballot just like they have for the past few election cycles. This year will be no different. You think this is a group that just wanted a "different Republican" elected? They went all in trying to defeat Susan Collins as a right wing extremist, for crying out loud.

Trump told Putin there would be "hell to pay" if Russia invaded Ukraine

"Other than the Ukraine Cheerleaders here (who understand that the war will end shortly after Trump takes office), I don’t know of many Republicans who want the above to be true."

Don't make it up as you are going along... This war would have never started if Trump was still there.

Nothing to make up. Like you say, the war wouldn’t have started if Trump were in power...and likewise the war will END if Trump gets back into power.

No amount of spin on the behalf of Nikki or Ron or anyone is going to change the fact that 40 percent of the Republican base will set themselves on fire for that man.

Then it is NOT Kabuki. Kabuki is when there is a predetermined outcome that is unchangeable regardless of the sentiment of the voters/caucus-goers. For instance, any elections held in North Korea are Kabuki. If a powerful candidate is up against a field of weak candidates, it is simply a well-deserved thrashing.

I don’t read his comments that way. The Lincoln project is/was one of the most diabolical and cleverly evil organizations I’ve ever encountered, or more appropriately heard of.

To claim they work for Republicans while surreptitiously working to sabotage them. They raked in huge money. I don’t see why that bandwagon is particularly over. It seems to be the new national pastime.

Maybe you’re taking this comment as giving up on the idea of destroying Trump, Trump bashing has a solid 5 years ahead of it. The media NEVER gets tired of this trope. They may make a little less money if and when Trump is elected, but I for one feel confident they worked out their scam and have no great reason to abandon it, win, lose, or draw.

I doubt this thing will still be going on March 5th (Super Tuesday) but if so it will end that day for sure.

No one can beat Trump.
