Progressive Rep Makes the Case for a $14 Trillion Reparations Program

Democrat Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York is calling for reparations from the federal government.

Despite the massive price tag of reparations—$14 trillion—Bowman argued there’s a way to pay for it "without raising taxes on anyone.”

“When COVID was destroying us, we invested in the American people in a way that kept the economy afloat,” Bowman told The Journal News. “The government can invest the same way in reparations without raising taxes on anyone.”

“Where did the money come from?” he added. “We spent it into existence.”

Bowman is among 14 Democrats supporting H.R. 414, a resolution introduced last year that recognizes the U.S. “has a moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of Black people in the United States.”

It is white people who are owed billions in reparations—they have been viciously slandered and attacked and discriminated against in education and employment for decades.

Reparations now!

The logic, it hurts.........................

People used a stylus to draw symbols of agricultural produce on wet clay tablets. These represented a debt of the buyer to the seller, and this is the first record of people trading without using a good itself but a representation of it.

I would like to see this well-thought out proposal codified into the Dem convention platform for the Biden/Harris ticket this summer. If not, the only explanation can be racism.

As soon as the crime rate is cut by 75% we’ll consider that.

Count up all the welfare, SNAP, Section 8, medicaid, free education and deduct it from ‘what we owe them’.

I assure you that they will owe US money.

"... We spent it into existence..."

I was going to say that that is the most stupid thing that I have ever heard. But just this morning I read an article that mentioned Hank Johnson and the tipping island so Jamaal's just going to have to be happy at #2.

I had no idea that Jamal was the translation for Rumplestilskin. That explains much. I wonder if he has planned his retirement in Wakanda yet.

Blacks should only get the money if they renounce their citizenship and leave the country forever.

...the U.S. “has a moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of Black people in the United States.”

Bull crap. For over 40 years I did reparation consulting for lawyers. Assuming reparations are in order, the concept of reparations is to leave the plaintiff in a position of financial indifference between the having the event occur (e.g., slavery in the US) and having it not occur (e.g., no slavery). To estimate the value, you have to calculate the cost to the plaintiff of the event. To pay reparations to means to compare the income lost to slaves compared to what they would have earned had they not been exported as slaves over the past 150 years.

I did the calculation using the major source of slaves, which was primarily the African nations of Angola, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. I compared black wages in the US with the average wages in those countries and then took the present value of the sum over 157 years.

The calculations show that each US black owes non-blacks in the US $640,000. In other words, being in the US for those years made blacks today financially better off by $640,000 than if they had remained in their African homeland. I wonder where Mr. Bowman wants me to apply for my check?

Oh, and by the way, thinking reparations can be paid without an increase in taxes just shows that his understanding of economics is close to zero.

Nope.

We can send you back and revoke your citizenship in this awful country, though. And we’ll make sure you never come back to experience this terrible place.

If anyone can submit a claim and prove they were held as a slave in the United States, I'm all for reparations being paid by those companies, families, and individuals that held them in slavery.

If anyone can submit a claim and prove their ancestors were held as slaves in the United States, and they were personally disenfranchised because of it, I'm all for those people seeking compensation by filing lawsuits against those companies, families, and individuals that enslaved their ancestors.

My ancestors emigrated from Czechoslovakia, Germany and Ireland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. My family doesn't owe anyone reparations, regardless of the color of my skin, or theirs.

What the reparations crowd needs to evaluate is whether they would have been better off in Africa. Africa is still primitive and devoid of progress and opportunity.
Go inland and the people are still in mud huts, without electricity and water. Back there education is whattt????

I would gladly support a $100K payment to all of them, providing they leave the country and are barred from ever returning.
