Respiratory distress is caused by the inability to exhale carbon dioxide. Hypoxia is painless, and even causes a mild almost euphoric high. (I know from personal experience.) That is why hypoxia is called insidious. You’re usually dead before you know what’s happening.
Nitrogen hypoxia has been used to euthanize animals for decades. It also has the advantage of not using dangerous chemicals.
They could suck the air out of his chamber also. They do that to teach future pilots what hypoxia feels like....only they don’t take you to the point of passing out.
