Finland's conservative former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb has won Sunday's presidential election, final results show.
He secured 51.6% of the vote, while his Green Party rival Pekka Haavisto, the former foreign minister, had 48.4%. Mr Haavisto has already admitted defeat. It is the first election since Finland joined the Nato military alliance.
Mr Stubb, 55, takes a hardline approach towards Russia, with which the Nordic nation shares a long land border.

Um, hard liner against Russia, will see how much “distance” there is.
The history Finland has with Soviet Union/russia and rhetoric coming out of the Kremlin towards Finland, flooding the border with people….
Guess we will see
This is merely a small observation about the article itself. The "Conservative Ex-PM" is not a conservative in our American sense of the word, any more than Sunak in Britian is a "conservative." We should always recall that the various flavors of socialism -- welfare state and such -- conceal themselves in words. Such as Barack Obama, conservative Wahsington Post, 22 November 2019.
The BBC article says nothing more about Stubb's or his party's position on things not "Putin." He is a career politician, educated in the US, London and Paris. Like so many other career politicians, the adjective "conservative" is merely a moniker, and not a statement of principles.
Finland has other issues, which the BBC didn't mention.
"Finland’s general government deficit is growing despite the fiscal adjustment efforts, and the accumulation of debt will continue in the immediate years ahead. The public debt-to-GDP ratio will already exceed 80% in 2026. Finland’s public finances will be undermined in the coming years by significantly lower growth in tax revenues and reductions in social security contributions, as well as by strong growth in social benefits paid and in public demand and interest expenditure. "Finland’s economy is in recession and the recovery will be slow Suomen Pankki, 19 December 2023
Not sure what is "right wing" about him. Maybe because he was educated at the London School of Economics.
He is very smart and was a talented athlete as well. He is multilingual, speaking five languages.
Educated in the London School of Economics, which is the school of Hayek. Not sure if the London School of Economics is still free-market based or not.
He speaks English, French, German, Swedish, and Finnish. He graduated from high school in Florida.
Thank you for perspective on Stubb.
My mother’s grand parents were Swede’s who immigrated to the USA from Finland. Think they may be been on island in the bay of Bothnia, between Sweden and Finland. Her grandfather had to serve in the White Russian Army before they could move to the US. They were in Minnesota which has long been leftist, but they were die hard Republicans.
A military invasion of Finland from the Russia could possibly happen, but a more lethal ideological invasion from Europe is happening now — European LGBT, antisemitism, and green socialism.
