Hawaii governor proposes $25 'climate tax' on tourists to protect the state's beaches and prevent wildfires

Hawaii's governor wants to impose a $25 'climate fee' on tourists, saying the funds collected would be used to protect the state's beaches and prevent wildfires.

Governor Josh Green, a Democrat, last month introduced a bill that would impose the flat fee upon check-in at hotels or vacation rentals, projecting it will raise about $68 million annually.

'It's a very small price to pay to preserve paradise,' Green told the Wall Street Journal, saying the new tax would fund a state fire marshal, new fire breaks to protect vulnerable communities, and disaster insurance.

This only proves that the climate change cult devotees are nothing but a bunch of con artists. I’m all for good stewardship of God’s earth that He created, but Marxism isn’t the answer, given that the most environmentally destructive regimes on earth were Marxist dictatorships.

Biting the hand that feeds them.

Hawaii would not have a pot to pee in weren’t it for tourists and the military.

Hawaii is lost to the rats. Sad. The rats ruin everything they touch.

I lived in Hawaii at age 5/6. Attended Pearl Harbor Elementary School for kindergarten/1st grade. Compliments of my dad working at CinCPacFlt for a couple years. I've never been back. The place is unattractive politically. No point in helping them finance their stupidity.

When going on a vacation that costs several thousand dollars, I doubt an extra $25 will make many look elsewhere.

The last time that I went on vacation was 1999. It was a week in Wales. About $4500. Since then I only take day trips. Places I can drive and be home before midnight. Hawaii will never be one of my destinations.

I don’t believe one state can tax a person who travels there from another state. Hawaii is no longer their own country.

We haven’t flown anywhere for vacation in years. Probably the last big flight vacation was to Hawaii with the kids. The last few years, we’ve been taking driving trips exploring Montana, Washington, and British Columbia and Alberta. This past summer was a long one from North Idaho through the North Cascades to Whistler, then east to Banff National Park and Jasper before heading south to home. We were worried about all the forest fire smoke (which all the smoke maps indicated was real bad), but we never hit any. Just glorious late summer / early fall weather. Prices were good in Canada, too, because of the exchange rate.

Another grift. Every cent will go to family and pal’s salaries. Maybe a few bucks to another Enron-lite.

You might if it was $25...per person...per night at a hotel stay...and per car rental...and per entertainment ticket...

“Hawaii would not have a pot to pee in weren’t it for tourists and the military.”
And very well off rich people and the retirees that own the Aina (land).

Population of the state is about 1.4 million.
1 million are on Oahu ( government and military)
that where most the money is made.
Outer islands live off property owners.
That was really shown to be the case during the
Flu scare(covid) and tourism virtually stopped.

My bet is this tax money will be a slush fund for political payoffs. The fires in Lahaina were far worse because of the ineptitude of local officials. The Director of the Maui Emergency Management Agency had no experience in emergency management and had been chief of staff to a former mayor. Residents were not alerted to the fires and some fire hydrants had no water.
